The wires are then connected to the implant stimulator. No fluid should be allowed to
contaminate contact surfaces or to enter the female connector. Scratching or cutting
of the silicone rubber surface should be strictly avoided. At this stage functioning of
the whole system should tested a final time before closure.
When the pediatric electrode with an extension lead is used, 5 cm of wire lead from
the electrode to the compound connector and the connector itself, together about 8
cm of length, are left inside the thorax. This wire lead system has been especially
designed for active pediatric patients. The compound connector is left inside the
thorax to protect the electrode side of the plug from mechanical stress.
Connecting of the electrode wire lead and the implant stimulator should be done
carefully, without haste and observing the black color band polarity marking, see Fig.
4 and Fig. 11. Surplus wire should be coiled up neatly and tied together to prevent
formation of a wire spring, which might erode through the skin. The wire lead coil
should be fixed to the ground in a safe distance of the connectors. The connecting
plugs are covered by bags made of Gore-Tex™. The same material could be used to
cover loops of surplus wire.
