APPENDIX 1. SYSTEM SET-UP FOR ELECTRODE TESTING
1. Connect a sterile packaged energy transfer coil to the stimulus controller. Perform
the following settings on the programming module. (Code switches of the module
should be turned only by a snugly fitting screwdriver. The switches can be turned in
both directions. A distinct snap is felt when the switch has turned into the correct
position of a number):
- inspiration duration (ID): 1.5 s
- minimum and maximum pulse interval (PI): 40 ms
- sigh interval: 0 0 breaths
- left and right TV slope: 50 % ID (inspiration duration)
- left and right channel: all current switches of each combination to zero
- left "THR. SELECT" to "1"
- right "THR. SELECT" to "0"
A combination is "deleted" when its threshold and tidal volume current switches are
set to zero.
2. Press the "LOCK"+"ON" keys of the stimulus controller to turn it on.
3. Set the following parameters to the stimulus controller:
- mode: "BILAT"
- volume: "HIGH" 100% 100%
- rate: 20/min
4. Plug in the programming module cable.
5. Increase the left threshold current combination 1 gradually until first
diaphragmatic twitches are observed. This threshold current value is recorded. Write
it down on a form (Form 1).
6. Repeat step 5 with left "THR. SELECT" switch values "2" for combination 2, "3"
for combination 3 and "4" for combination 4.
7. Turn the left "THR. SELECT" switch to "0" and the right "THR. SELECT"
switch to "1".
8. Connect the energy transfer coil to the right channel. Repeat steps 5 and 6 at the
right side.
When finished, disconnect the coil from the controller, turn the "THR. SELECT"
switches on both sides to "0" position and turn off the controller.
