The wire leads are the result of a compromise between mechanical strength and
plasticity and elasticity and for that reason are somewhat less strong than leads of
cardiac pace-makers. Connecting of the electrode wire lead and the implant
stimulator should be done carefully, without haste and observing the black colour
band polarity marking, see Fig. 5 and Fig. 11. Surplus wire should be coiled up
neatly and tied together to prevent formation of a wire spring, which might erode
through the skin. The wire lead coil should be fixed to the ground in a safe distance
of the connectors.

After final careful hemostasis the wounds are closed. The use of a pleural drain is up
to the surgeon.
8 PREVENTION OF INFECTION
All measures should be taken to avoid infection of the implanted parts of the system.
The patient should be in good health at the time of surgery. No systemic infection,
preferable not even a pressure sore should be present. During the operation the
strictest rules of aseptic technique should be followed. Prophylactic antibiotics
should be used according to the regimen which is in use in the hospital for placement
of endoprothesis of the hip.
