5. Functional description

5.1
Basic functions
Two independent control circuits are installed on the mother-
board.
- First control circuit:
Supplies the control panel and the external users.
- Output control panel supply with electronic fuse 2 A.
- Output external user with electronic fuse 1x2 A, 2x1 A.
- Second control circuit:
Serves as a charger for the accumulators. The charging
current is limited to 2.6 A.
The accumulator charging voltage is monitored and ad-
justed according to the temperature with the aid of an NTC
resistor.
The charge terminating voltage has been correctly set as
per VdS before leaving the factory, reversible for Sonnen-
schein A500 series).
The supply voltage for the control panel and external users do-
es not require adjusting as it is monitored and adjusted by the
accumulated charging voltage so that in case of a mains failure,
large voltage jumps are avoided.
Voltage surge protection:
The power supply is equipped with a voltage surge protection
which is triggered should the output voltage exceed 17 V DC
in case of a fault.
Switching off the power supply:
If the accumulator voltage drops below 10.5 V during
accumulator operation, the power supply to the control
panel and the external users is switched off.
This avoids unforeseeable reactions from the control panel
on the one hand, and protects the accumulator from deep
discharging on the other.
A signal is given before switch off via BUS-2 or ST2.
Test mode without mains: (key S2 "BON", S3 "BOFF")
For the start-up procedure, the mains voltage must be
available so that the output voltage (12 V DC) is connec-
ted to the power supply outputs.
The key S2 is necessary, when the power supply unit requires
operating without mains (e.g. for test purposes).
By pressing the S2 key the accumulator voltage is connected
to the power supply outputs.
With key S3 the accumulator voltage can be switched off
again.
Firmware Update in Bus operation mode MB-Secure:
Power supply firmware update via control panel.
5.2
Fault messages in MB-Panel Mode:
The messages are transmitted via the outputs S, S, SE and
mains (see Connection diagram ST2).
- "S" (ST2/2), Collective faults, negated, LOW active.
- "S" (ST2/3), Collective faults, HIGH active
The following fault causes are possible:
Mains / ext. user / charger controller defective /
accum. defective or missing / SE input / cover contact
With the DIP switch S1 certain fault causes can be swit-
ched to the collective fault output (see Chapter 7.2).
- "SE" (ST2/1), fault input, LOW active.
For connecting Fault outputs S of additional emergency po-
wer supplies (cascading).
- "Mains" (ST2/6), output, HIGH active.
This output is active during power on.
Mounting and Connection Instructions Mains/charger unit 12 V DC / 52 Ah
6. External NTC thermistor resistor
When using an external NTC thermistor resistor, the NTC1 on
the PCB must be removed (nip off).
The external NTC should be fixed to the accumulator in a
suitable manner (e.g. with double-sided adhesive tape) and
connected by soldering to ST4.

Basically, we recommend using an external NTC
thermistor resistor.
If the accumulator is not in the close vicinity of the
NTC1, an external NTC thermistor resistor must be
used.
For installation in compliance with VdS, an external
NTC thermistor resistor must always be used!
