makes it impossible to draw conclusions on the time yet to be expected up to the
end of the program. If the accumulator charging condition was not determined yet
the battery symbol will appear with a crossline in the middle (the battery symbol
being represented by an "S" in these instructions).
Charging and discharge currents
While charging or discharging is done the current I flowing through the accumulator
is displayed. Note that the current level is automatically adapted by the charger in
the Auto mode. If no current has been determined yet at the beginning of a program
or no current flows any longer upon termination of the program (READY/ERROR) "I =
0.000 A" will appear.
Times
The time displayed is the full time in hours and minutes (hh:mm) in which the accu-
mulator was charged and discharged. Any time required for capacitive recharging
(trickle) and the one for pauses are not added.
Charge times are generally shorter in the manual mode. In the automatic mode, char-
ge times can increase because they are determined by the accumulator itself.
Thus, for instance, in the automatic mode, an accumulator partially charged at 80 %
will need a long time until it is fully charged because only a capacitive or trickle
recharge current will flow here.
If an accumulator, while being charged, exceeds abt. 80 % of its reception capacity
some part of the charge current is converted into heat. This can cause the accumu-
lator to heat up.
Likewise, discharge times are also shorter in the manual mode. In the automatic
mode, charge times can increase because these times are also determined by the
accumulator itself.
Note that accumulators of a low capacity (e.g. 500 mAh) will hardly achieve their spe-
cified capacity, specifically while being discharged in the automatic mode because
the capacity which can be drawn depends on the discharge current very much and
almost half their capacity is discharged at a very high current.
There are different charging types for NiCd and NiMH accumulators:
Charging type
Charge current
Standard charging
C/10
Accelerated charging
C/3
Rapid charging
1C – 1.5 C

Charge time
From 14 to 16 hours
From 4 to 6 hours
from 75 to 45 minutes
LADESTROM
250mA
If charging is done by MANUAL, I, U, T or MANUAL I, U, C the charge-closing volta-
ge now has to be entered.
The charge-closing voltage per cell is variable from 1.35 to 1.55 V at 10 mV steps.
LADESPANNUNG
1.35V
If charging is done by MANUAL, I, U, T the maximum charge time is varied from 30
minutes to 16 hours at 30-minute steps. Display is effected in "hh:mm". Here, time
should be adapted in conformity with the charge current and the accumulator data.
For instance, if a charge is given as being 500 mA for 14 h for an accumulator of
5,000 mAh time has also to be reset to 7 h if the charge current chosen is 1 A.
LADEZEIT
00:30
If charging is done by MANUAL, I, U, C the maximum charging capacity is set to be
from 500 mAh to 30 AH. This is the capacity to be loaded into the accumulator and,
thus, not the rated capacity as indicated on the accumulator. It is advisable here to
enter 1.2 to 1.6 times the rated capacity of the accumulator; we recommend 1.4
times the rated capacity. Note that a larger capacity should be chosen for a smaller
current I and a smaller capacity for a large charge current I.
LADEKAPAZITAET
500mAh
Now, fix the discharging mode. There are 2 possible options for a discharge. Since
the accumulator is only charged in the CHARGE program this menu item will be skip-
ped in the CHARGE case.
ENTLADEMODUS
1. AUTOMATISCH
2. MAN. I,Umin
For an automatic discharge, the discharge current is automatically decreased with
the charge-carrying capacity of the accumulator diminishing whereas the current
level is fixed in the manual mode. Note that discharge times might increase in the
automatic mode.
If discharging is done by MAN., I, U min it is necessary to enter the maximum
discharge current first. This current is variable from 125 mA to 1 A at 125 mA steps.
For accumulator packs having from 16 to 20 cells, the discharge current is variable
from 125 mA to 750 mA.
