Then, the discharge-closing voltage is chosen. This discharge-closing voltage per
cell may be set from 0.80 to 1.15 V at 10 mV steps; we suggest 1.00 V as a readout
in the display.

The SELFDISCHARGE program still requires to fix the pause that is to be observed.
The pause is variable from one day to 30 days.

Once all parameters required are entered the charging program is started.
ATTENTION!
If any parameters entered are proved faulty disconnect the accu-
mulator pack from its terminals immediately and reconnect it
anew. Enter all parameters anew.
During a start, the fan installed will start up and the flashing arrow indicates whether
the accumulator concerned is just being charged or discharged. Charging is done
first in the CHA, CYC, and ALV programs whereas discharging is done first in the
DIS, CHK, and SLF programs.
All data available for the accumulator may be displayed. There are two ways of
representation here.
The two SELECT keys UP and DOWN allow to switch over between the two ways of
representation.
Pressing the ENTER key causes the two messages to be changed over every 4
seconds.

The charging program (e.g. CHA for CHARGE) and the charging capacity are dis-
played in the first line here. Furthermore, the accumulator symbol (S) shows the
approximate charging condition of the accumulator.

Charging modi
- AUTO: Current adjustment is automatic during charging and discharging. The
amperage is automatically accommodated to the respective condition of
the accumulator.
- MAN:
The level is fixedly adjusted for the charging and discharge currents.
Note that accumulators which are new or have been treated in an inexpert way
hitherto will possibly be capable of receiving only 30 % of their capacity at the begin-
ning. This poor efficiency manifests itself by a large charging capacity (C) and a very
small discharging capacity (D). Charge these accumulators by means of the ALIVE
program. The capacity drawable (D) will rise after some cycles.
NiCd and NiMH accumulators should be charged with C/3 up to 1C. For accumula-
tor packs comprising from 17 to 20 cells, we recommend that they should not be
charged automatically because these accumulator packs will not be completely
charged by the automatic system. They should be charged by MANUAL I,U,C or by
MANUaL I,U,T, i.e. by the CHECK program because the preceding discharge produ-
ces a defined initial condition. The maximum charge current I should be chosen to
range between C/10 and 1C and the charge-closing voltage per cell, which is adju-
stable from 1.35 V to 1.55 V, should be set to 1.45 V. Note that if the charge current
is small a small charge-closing voltage should be set and if the charge current is lar-
ge a large charge-closing voltage should be set. This current I which is set here is the
maximum charge current; if there are from 17 to 20 cells this current might happen
not to be achieved. If charging is effected according to MANUELL I,U,C from 1.2 to
1.6 times the rated capacity of the accumulator, i.e. from 120 to 160 %, should be
entered during the succeeding capacity entry; we recommend 1.4 times the rated
capacity, i.e. 140 %. Note that a large charging capacity should be chosen if the
charge current is small, and a small charging capacity if the charge current is large. If
charging is made according to MANUAL, I, U, T the charge time should be adapted
in conformity with the charge current and the accumulator data. For instance, if a
charge is indicated as being 500 mA for 14h for an accumulator of 5,000 mAh time
should also be reset t 7h for a charge current of 1A.
Accumulator voltage
The voltage of the accumulator is indicated in a non-loaded condition (and, therefo-
re, is not measurable during operation). If no voltage U is displayed the charged has
not determined it yet
Accumulator condition
To give a rough idea of the condition of the accumulator to be charged or dischar-
ged, this device displays a battery symbol. This symbol merely serves to see at a
short glance how far the charging or discharging procedure has progressed already.
Note that the battery symbol fills up from bottom to top during a discharge whereas
the symbol is emptied more and more from top to bottom during a discharge. This
