6. Software
After connecting the USB-to-LAN converter to a USB port, the user is asked by the
Windows operating system to indicate the path for the driver to permit installation as
usual in Windows hardware installations.
All required software components for using the eCOM Box are now installed.
6.2 Network and
To integrate the eCOM box in your network, connect it directly to the network or use the
included USB-to-LAN converter and supply it with power from the vehicle interface (15-pin
SUB-D plug) via the optional OBD cable or via the break-out-box eCOM Box Part F IP via a
lab mains adapter. Network communication with the eCOM Box takes place in two
different manners. They are:
Multicast communication: permits finding and selecting eCOM Boxes in the network,
independently of whether they are in the same sub network.
Unicast communication: configuration, test, update and user data communication t h a t
is possible only when the PC and eCOM are working in the same sub network.
Multicast communication makes it possible to find a connected eCOM Box even if the IP
address settings do not permit communication into the same subnet.
Changing the eCOM Box configuration or performance of self-tests and updates, as well
as using user programmes, requires Unicast communication and an IP configuration of
the PC and eCOM that boots both devices in the same sub network.
In the delivery condition, the eCOM box uses an IP-address from the AutoIP-area:
IP-adress: 169.254.255.42
Net mask: 255.255.0.0
To establish communication with the eCOM, you must connect the network adapter of
the diagnosis PC to the one of the eCOM Box. This may be done using the USB-to-LAN
converter (hardware ID: ASIX AX88772A). The network adapter of the diagnosis PC also
requires a static IP address in the form of:
IP-adress: 169.254.x.y (e.g.: x =1 , y=1; with x
Net mask: 255.255.0.0
