GLOSSARY OF TERMS FOR WOODWORKING
Arbor
The shaft on which a blade or cutting tool is mounted.

A cut made across the grain of the workpiece.
Freehand
A cut performed without using a fence, mitre gauge, holding device, work clamp, or other appropriate device to keep the work-
piece in place during the cut.

Saw Blade Path
The area over, under, behind, or in front of the blade. When it applies to the workpiece, this consists of the area which will be,
or has been, cut by the blade.
Set
The distance from which the tip of the saw blade tooth is bent (or set) outwards from the face of the blade.
Kick-back
Sudden recoil of a workpiece being cut.
Usually due to the fact that the workpiece is not against the fence, has hit the blade or has inadvertently been placed in
contact with the blade rather than the presence of a saw mark in the workpiece.
Through Sawing
Any cutting operation where the blade extends completely through the thickness of the workpiece.
Workpiece
The item which is being cut. The surfaces of a workpiece are commonly referred to as faces, ends, and edges.
No-Hands Zone
The area between the cutting lines on the left and right sides of the mitre table base. This zone is identified by "no-hands"
labels placed inside the cutting lines on the mitre table base. The operator's hands must stay clear of this area during all
sawing operations.
