FM Muting
With the toggle switch @ in its top
position, interstation noise will be muted
when tuning on the FM band. It may be
found that it is only possible to listen to
very weak FM stations when the muting
Circuit is switched off (bottom position of
switch @).
FM Field Strength Meter
The meter @ serves as a tuning meter
and a field strength meter and is
particularly useful when using a "steerable"
aerial system.
It can be used to get information of relative
strength of stations and their signal/noise
ratio — the sensitivity of the receiver is
best checked when switched to mono and
with the AFC and muting circuits switched
off as this allows for the reception of
programmes whose signal strength is only
slightly greater than the noise level.
Normaily for good "noiseless" stereo
reception a signal strength of at least ten
times that required for mono
reception is
needed.
With this receiver when the aerial signal
falls below 80 uV the reception changes
from stereo towards mono (the stereo
indicator lamp remains on). The result is
reduced separation but less interference
(noise). Therefore the receiver adjusts
automatically when receiving distant
stations.

TUNING
The signal levels quoted are approximate.
MULTIPATH Indicator @ —
When receiving VHF programmes,
distortion can occur due to reflected
signals being received at the aerial
(MULTIPATH reception). If this problem
exists the MULTIPATH indicator will light
up, the aerial should be re-positioned
for a better signal (possibly using an -
aerial rotator) or another station carrying
the same transmission selected.
Stereo Balance
;
The balance control
@ is used to control
the intensity of the volume from each
loudspeaker and enables you to compen-
sate for effects caused by room acoustics.
The control should be adjusted so that
a monophonic
programme
source
appears
to come from midway between the
two loudspeaker units.
Tone Filter
A single frequency band can be selected
with the tone filter switch @. By using the
control below, the level of the frequency
band selected can be increased or
reduced to compensate for room
acoustics. This adjustment is carried out
in addition to the normal tone adjustments
using the bass and treble controls @, @.
This facility is useful with microphone
operation and can be used to reduce
acoustic feedback or to reduce sibilance
when speaking close to the microphone.
Linear/Loudness Switch @
With the linear / loudness switch @ in the
top (LIN) position, the frequency response
of the unit is "level" throughout its
frequency range. When the switch is in the
"loudness" (CONT) position a degree of
bass and treble boost is applied at low
listening levels in order to compensate for
deficiencies in aural perception. At high
volume levels the frequency response
returns to "linear", no matter what position
the switch is in.
Noise Filter
Operation of the switch
@ connects the
noise filter into the circuitry, and the filter
produces a rapid cut-off above 6.8 kHz. This
may be very useful when playing records
with high surface noise.
Record Reproduction
For connecting a record player with
magnetic pick-up, socket €® on the rear of
the set is provided. The set incorporates a
separate pre-amplifier
/ equalizer so that
a separate equalizer is not necessary. For
connecting a record player with magnetic
system and combined preamplifier /
equalizer or ceramic / crystal cartridge,
the sockets TB 1 and TB 2 are provided.
For record reproduction, press the
corresponding key @.
(TA, TB 1 or TB 2 resp.).
Tape Recorder Connection
The sockets @ and € (TB 1 and TB 2)
permit to connect two separate tape /
cassette recorders for recording and
playback. For playback press the
corresponding key @ (TB 1 or TB 2)
on the front of the set. It is also possible
to rerecord tapes from one machine onto
the other. Please refer to the separate
operating instructions supplied with the
tape recorder.
Via-tape Monitoring
This set is provided with a monitor socket
(pos. 3) which permits via-tape monitoring
when recording onto a tape machine being
designed for monitoring operation. Connect
the Monitor socket with a standard lead
(e. g. GRUNDIG
lead 242) to the corres-
ponding socket on the tape machine. If
you now set the Monitor switch @ to its
top position, the recording is continued
without interruption, but the receiver
amplifier is connected to the playback
contacts of the Monitor socket and you
will hear the just recorded signal. By
setting the Monitor switch repeatedly to
its top and then to its bottom position,
you can compare the just recorded
programme with the original programme,
and thus check the recording.
