25. Check the assembled connector with the
microscope (D).
26. If the connector is dirty, clean it with the supplied
lint-free cloths. If it is badly contaminated, dampen
the cloth with isopropanol.
27. Place the dust protection cap (e) on the connector
ferrule.
28. If the result of cleaving is unsatisfactory (bad case:
see photo), repeat the fitting of the connector.
29. Follow the same steps with the other cores.
Appendix
Attenuation measurement
Check the optical quality of the cable by measuring the
attenuation according to IEC 61300-3-4 (measurement
method B for a patch cable)
1.
Connect the launch fiber to the sender and receiver.
2.
Run a zero balance of the measurement devices.
3.
Disconnect the launch fiber from the receiver.
4.
Add the cable under test between launch fibre and
receiver.

Note: The surface of the connector is okay. Slight
irregularities at the edge are of no significance.
Note: The stripe pattern on the left of the right-hand
picture suggests damaged cladding. The speckled pattern
in the middle of the left picture indicates an unevenly
broken core.

Read off the measurement result.
6.
Subtract the fibre attenuation (a = typical fiber
attenuation [dB/ km] * fiber length [km]).
7.
Dismantle and repeat the fitting of the connector
connected to the launch fiber if the calculated
connector loss exceeds more than 1.5 dB.
8.
Swap the ends of the line being tested and repeat
the measurement.
Note: If you find that connector attenuations > 1.5 dB are
on the increase, the cleave tool should be sent in for
inspection.
