Measure: Check coaxiality; if necessary re-estab-
lish or replace electric motor.
Cause 5: Vibrations in the winding.
Measure: Can be reduced by using higher quality
motors.
Cause 6: Installation in resonant surroundings.
Measure: Reposition fan or use sound-absorbing
housing.
Excessive vibrations
Cause 1: Rotating parts imbalanced.
Measure: Check balance of impeller and, if ne-
cessary, restore to the prescribed values. Check
alignment of drive and/or balance of washers.
Check that shafts are straight.
Cause 2: Installation structure unsuitable: its nat-
ural frequency is close to the fan's speed.
Measure: Use weights to increase and/or change
natural frequency of installation structure.
Cause 3: Screw connections too loose.
Measure: Tighten.
Cause 4: Bearing defect.
Measure: Check bearing for wear and correct lub-
rication.

19 Cleaning and maintenance

WARNING Danger to life if fan is des-
troyed as a result of imbalance.
Imbalance and vibration on the motor's bearings
may destroy the fan and lead to personal injury
and damage to surrounding building components.
Check the vibration characteristics of the fan on a
regular basis (ISO 14694). A sudden change of
vibration levels may indicate that an inspection/
maintenance is urgently needed.

19.1 Cleaning

Cleaning and maintenance may only be un-
dertaken by qualified personnel and under ob-
servation of the enclosed safety instructions.
Cleaning and maintenance intervals should
be determined by the operating company. Fre-
quency and measures depend on the operating
conditions.
1. Disconnect the fan from the mains and secure
the mains fuse with a padlock against recon-
nection.
2. Wait until the fan has cooled down sufficiently
and the impeller is stationary before removing
the weather protection hood or any other pro-
tection against accidental contact or touching
the fan.
3. Lock the impeller so that it cannot move any
more. This protects you from unforeseen
rotary movements, such as those which may
be caused by air flows in the ventilation chan-
nel.
4. Clean the impeller, remove layers of dirt, dust
and grease.
A clean impeller is very important and pre-
vents imbalances, which may result in haz-
ardous situations and damage the fan. If
impellers have curved blades, material may be
deposited on the backs of the blades when
conveying materials which are electrostatically
charged or contain resin or adhesive. Clean
the impeller carefully. Residue accumulating at
certain points will cause imbalances sooner
than an even layer of dirt will.
Replace the impeller if it is too dirty or if it has
coatings which are causing imbalance.
5. When air is drawn in, frictional/grinding dusts
or corrosive air may wear the impeller and
cause vibrations. Clean the impeller as previ-
ously described. If the impeller is heavily worn,
replace it with a genuine spare part.
6. Clean the inner parts of the fan and remove all
contamination.
7. Clean the motor regularly with a cloth. Re-
move all layers of dust and dirt to prevent a
fire hazard.
8. Clean the fan's intake opening and protective
grille, if installed, to prevent blockages and
overheating.
9. Refit any components you may previously
have removed. Ensure that the protective grille
is positioned correctly.
