2 Grinding

The grinding process can be divided into plane grinding PG and
fine grinding FG. In the following short descriptions you will find
a number of useful tips for grinding with RotoForce-1.
PG is unnecessary when the specimens are prepared as single
specimens, as all such specimens are levelled individually. After
sectioning, using a Struers wet-cutting machine, the surface of
the specimens is plane enough to proceed directly to a fine
grinding stage.
When using the specimen holder ROFLU the specimens must be
ground to the same level using a PG step.
FG is used to remove the deformation introduced during PG or
abrasive wet-cutting, and to produce specimens with a surface
ready for polishing. We recommend one-step FG like MD-Allegro,
MD/DP-Plan or MD/DP-Pan.
Do not use RotoForce-1 with specimen mover plates for plane
grinding. PG is normally unnecessary, and the use of coarse
abrasives can result in unplane specimens.
If, for whatever reason, it is necessary to grind using coarse
abrasive when working with specimen mover plates, the
planeness may be improved by carrying out the following:
n Check that the distance between specimen mover plate and
preparation disc is maximum 1 - 1.5 mm.
n The height of the specimen should not exceed 0.7 x specimen
diameter. Example: a specimen with a diameter of 30 mm
should not be higher than 30 x 0.7 = 21 mm.
n Use a grain size as small as possible.
n Use a mounting resin with a wear resistance similar to the
specimens' wear resistance.
n Use 150 rpm speed for both the grinding disc and specimen
mover.
n Use low force.
