WHAT YOU NEED:

Newspaper to protect our work surface
A plate
A large saucepan,
A small saucepan or try collect some tin cans
(for meeting the wax)
Scissors
WAX is the melted mix of paraffi n and stearine.
PARAFFIN melts from 40°C when in small pieces in a bain-marie (water bath). It becomes transparent.
STEARINE is a powder that improves the quality of the candle. It makes turning out of the mould easier and
makes the candle burn better (the wax does not drip).
CANDLE GEL is a substitute for paraffi n. It is a gelatinous paraffi n oil that melts at 65°C. Gel candles don't
always have a very nice smell when they are lit.
• HOW DO I MELT THE WAX?
CAUTION! Ask an adult for help.
Prepare the wax by mixing 5 cups of PARAFFIN and 1/2 cup of STEARINE. Multiply
the quantities by 2 or 3 for bigger candle.
Pour water into the large saucepan or tin can. Next, mix the mixture with the wooden
spoon. WARNING: above 70°C the wax risks catching fi re. In that case, smother the
fl ame by putting a lid on the saucepan.
DEFINITION OF BAIN-MARIE: it is a way of heating consisting of putting the wax
in a container (for example a saucepan or tin can), which is itself placed in a larger
saucepan containing water kept at a gentle heat.
• HOW DO I MELT THE GEL?
CAUTION! Ask an adult for help.
With the scissors, cut some gel pieces about 2 cm large.
Melt the pieces over a low heat in the bain-marie (water bath) for about 15 minutes.
When the gel is liquid, pour it directly into the transparent glass containers by succes-
sive steps, allowing to cool a little between each step.
WARNING: above 65°C the gel risks catching fi re.
• HOW DO I COLOUR THE WAX OR GEL?
Break a pastel stick into pieces and mix with the wax. Th e more shavings you add, the more intense the resul-
ting colour.
• HOW DO I FIX A WICK ?
Cut the wick depending on the height of the candle. Fix the wick in the chosen mould by pouring a little mel-
ted wax in the bottom.
• TIPS!
If the candle forms a hole around the wick, you can add more molten wax to fi ll this small hole
If you spill the wax, leave it to dry and scrape off later
To stop bubbles forming in the gel, pour it carefully along a skewer.
If there is some unused molten gel left over, let it cool. You can then reuse it later on for other candles.
