WARNING
Do not flush dry gas continuously for unnecessarily long
periods through the soda lime in the anesthesia system!
Otherwise the soda lime will dehydrate. If the humidity falls
below a minimum set point, undesirable reactions can
occur, independent of the type of lime and the volatile
anesthetic agent being used:
–
reducted CO
absorption,
2
–
increased heat generation in the CO
therefore increased breathing gas temperature,
–
CO formation,
–
absorption and/or breakdown of the volatile anesthetic
agent.
The above mentioned reactions may endanger the patient,
e.g.:
–
CO poisoning
–
insufficient depth of anesthesia
–
burns of the airways
Replacing
The soda lime must be replaced at the latest if one of the following
conditions applies:
–
The inspiratory CO
concentration has reached approx.
2
5 mmHg.
–
Approximately 2/3 of the soda lime have changed to violet.
The color indicator may slowly regenerate and the soda lime
may revert to white, nevertheless its absorption ability is spent!
–
The soda lime has been at the anesthesia workstation for
1 week.
The soda lime must be replaced, even if the soda lime has not
been used!
Principle of operation
Drägersorb 800 Plus binds the CO
in an exothermic reaction. The hydroxides are converted into
carbonates and water.
