General instructions for XEROLYT
1.
Introduction
These general instructions must be readily available to operators of the electrode at all times. Before using the electrode, these
instructions must be read and understood by all operating personnel.
Owing to their special characteristics, pH/redox electrodes with a XEROLYT
applications:
- Measurements in highly contaminating solutions
- Measurements in emulsions and suspensions
- Measurements in effluents/wastewater
- Measurements in solutions containing proteins
- Measurements in solutions with a high sulfide content
- Measurements in hot alkaline solutions (with Type HA pH glass)
- Installation in measuring and control loops with wide pressure fluctuations.
®
XEROLYT
electrodes are not suitable for the following applications:
- Measurements where the electrode is steam-sterilized
- Measurements with large, long-term, temperature variations
- Measurements in solutions with a pH value of pH <2
- Measurements in solutions containing chlorine
2. Safety remarks
®
The XEROLYT
electrodes are intended solely for the purpose described in §1 above. The electrodes consist partly of glass. If they are
to be cleaned or calibrated using acid or alkaline solutions, protective clothing (goggles and gloves) must be worn. In addition, local
and in-house-safety regulations must be observed. We recommend that the electrodes only be put into operation in conjunction with
original products/accessories from METTLER TOLEDO. The electrodes may be operated and serviced only by personnel familiar with
the equipment in question and who have read and understood these instructions.

Product description
The following data apply only to the XEROLYT
specification of the indicator electrode should also be taken into consideration.)
The markings on each electrode provide the following information:

Installation and preparation for use
1.
Carefully inspect the electrode on delivery for mechanical damage to the membrane or the shaft. Electrodes showing any
defects should be sent back in the original packaging, accompanied by the relative invoice number.
2.
Remove the watering cap and rinse electrode with distilled water.
After rinsing, a pH electrode unit should be dried by careful dabbing with a paper handkerchief or Kleenex tissue. Do not
rub the glass membrane, since this can lead to very sluggish response.
3.
Remove any air bubbles present in the membrane chamber of the glass electrode by lightly swinging round in a vertical
plane.
4.
pH electrode assemblies with dry glass membranes must be conditioned by immersion for several hours in 3 mol/l KCl in the
supplied watering cap (use approx. 1 ml).
5.
Calibration and measurement
XEROLYT electrodes require 2-point calibration. To calibrate, first remove the watering cap. The electrode is then dipped in succession
into two different buffer solutions with given pH reference values, and the transmitter calibrated to these buffer values (for example
buffer pH 4.01 and pH 7.00). Please refer to the instruction manual of the transmitter for details.
6.
Maintenance
The electrode with polymer electrolyte XEROLYT
dries out, it is necessary to recondition it before use by immersion in FRISCOLYT
electrode should be stored with fitted watering cap containing 3 mol/l KCl or Mettler-Toledo FRISCOLYT
electrode tip and the apertures (diaphragms) must be thoroughly cleaned using de-ionized water. Regeneration of the glass membrane
of a pH electrode with HF (hydrofluoric acid) is not recommended, since HF will attack the XEROLYT reference system.
7.
Disposal
If no relative official regulations are in force, used or defective electrode and the packaging can be disposed as ordinary household
waste.
8.
Warranty
In the event of manufacturing faults, 12 months warranty from date of production is granted.
