During installation, make sure the bores of the pipeline flanges are flush. If necessary,
readjust the rotatable flanges at the expansion joint.
Pull the screws at the flange tight crosswise and evenly; hold the wrench tight on the
inside, and turn on the outside to avoid damaging the rubber bellows with the tools.
Retighten the screws after initial start-up.
The screw torques for the individual types are listed in the tables in the annex.
The torques listed in the tables refer to new expansion joints. If required, the values may
be exceeded by 50 %.
Illus.
The sealing surfaces of the companion flanges must be perfectly even and clean
in the sealing area.
Illus.
Groove-and-tongue flanges are inadmissible.
Illus.
Companion flanges with necks squash the rubber flange of the expansion joint.
Illus.
Expansion joints with a narrow sealing strip (types D-22, D-42) are normally filled-
with levelling pieces (shunt seal) when delivered.
Illus.
Expansion joints with a narrow sealing strip (types D-22, D-42) may not be sealed
in series. The rubber flanges may be damaged by too high torques.
Illus.
Companion flanges with sharp-edged pipe ends must be installed with an additio-
nal flat seal.
Illus.
Sharp-edged pipe ends cut the expansion joint sealing surface.
When installing the tightening straps for STENFLEX
make sure there is no contamination between the tightening straps and the rubber bel-
lows. The tightening straps must fit close to the bellows. The tightening straps may
not cut into the rubber bellows. The maximum admissible screw torque of 25 Nm for
tightening straps may not be exceeded.
NEVER subject the rubber expansion joints to stress by torsion; mind the admissible
movement absorption that may not be exceeded during operation, either.
For vacuum operation, use expansion joints with guiding pipes (mind the flow direction).
During electric-welding work on the pipeline near expansion joints, bypass them with
grounding litz wire. Always protect the expansion joints from welding spatters and ther-
mal strain when welding.
If the flow rate is high, possibly leading to resonances or turbulences where the flow
direction is redirected (e.g. behind pipes, valves, T-pieces, pipe bends), a guiding pipe
must be installed. During installation, please mind the flow direction.
If possible, install the expansion joints so that visual checks can be carried out regularly
to make sure they are intact.
Cover the expansion joints to protect them from damages of any kind.
Do not coat the bellows with paint, and do not apply insulation.
The fixed points and guides of the pipelines must be sufficiently dimensioned to bear
the pipeline forces. The operator is responsible for making sure the work is carried out
according to good professional practice.
Only fasten the fixed points of the pipeline after the expansion joint has been installed
(after pulling the flange screws tight).
The operator must provide for the necessary safety and monitoring devices in the pipe-
line system (e. g. installation of temperature probes, pressure-limiting valves, measures
to prevent pressure surges and water impact).
