7. During programming, the pressure selection buttons will light sequentially
until the selected pressure setting is attained.
8. When programming is completed (approximately 2 seconds), the
programmer will emit a long beep sound and the display will change to:
PROGRAMMING
COMPLETE
9. After a short wait, the LCD panel will change to the original message
once again:
PRESSURE
10. Use an x-ray with an intensifying TV screen, or an x-ray plate,
to confirm proper valve pressure.
When documenting the valve pressure with x-rays, take care when
positioning the patient's head so that:
• the nonimplanted side of the head rests on the plate (the implanted side
is uppermost from the plate), and,
• the inlet valve is parallel to the x-ray plate.
The Effect of Ambient Temperature on Valve Programming
Ambient temperature plays a major role in how many programming cycles
can be completed before the transmitter reaches the temperature shut-
off point and the message "TRANSMITTER COOLING PLEASE WAIT"
is displayed. It also has an effect on how quickly the transmitter will cool.
In warm ambient environments, the programmer reaches the temperature
shut-off point much more quickly, and cools much more slowly than in
cooler ambient environments.
It is suggested that the programmer and transmitter be stored in a cool dry
location. Avoid storage in areas with high heat, such as automobile trunks or
sunny windows.
CAUTION: The transmitter shut-off temperature has been chosen to
assure patient safety. Do not place the transmitter in contact with the
patient while the message "TRANSMITTER COOLING PLEASE WAIT"
is displayed.
Programming Procedure in Case of an Inverted Valve
An inverted valve can be diagnosed on x-ray; the white marker will appear on
the left side of the valve, instead of the right side. Programming the inverted
valve requires a "double programming" to obtain the desired pressure setting.
1. Program the valve with the valve programmer at the 200 valve
pressure setting.
2. Calculate the following: 210 (constant) minus the desired pressure setting
equals the programming pressure setting. For example, where 70 is the
desired pressure setting: 210 – 70 = 140.
3. Push the button for the programming pressure setting (in this
example, 140) on the programmer; hold the transmitter in place for
approximately 2 seconds until the long beep sound is heard.
If it is unclear whether reprogramming took place, repeat Steps 1 through 3,
otherwise the programming will be incorrect.
NOTE: When the valve is inverted, pressure settings of 190 and 200 are not
possible to program.

Cause: Transmitter temperature is too high. Too many programming
attempts in a short time period.
Solutions: Allow transmitter to cool until the following message
is displayed:

TRY AGAIN
Cause: Error in transmitted programming signal.
Solutions: When the following message appears, repeat
program sequence:

Cause: Internal malfunction in the programmer.
Solutions: Return for service.
Symptom: No LCD panel display; no LED illumination.

Solutions: 1. Replace fuse with correct value and type.
2. Check power cord connection; check that the power
switch is on.
3. Check power (mains) supply integrity with a known
functioning device.
