USER INSTRUCTIONS
Please read these instructions in conjunction with the 3M™ Versaflo™
TR-603E-ASB Powered Air Turbo Reference Leaflet where you will find
information on:
• Approved combinations of facepieces and filters
• Spare parts
• Accessories
UNPACKING
Your 3M™ Versaflo™ TR-603E-ASB Powered Air Turbo should contain:
a) Powered Air Turbo
b) Airflow Indicator
c) User Instructions
d) Reference Leaflet
^ WARNING
Proper selection, training, use and appropriate maintenance are
essential in order for the product to help protect the wearer from
certain airborne contaminants. Failure to follow all instructions on the
use of these respiratory protection products and/or failure to properly
wear the complete product during all periods of exposure may
adversely affect the wearer's health, lead to severe or life threatening
illness or permanent disability.
For suitability and proper use follow local regulations, refer to all information
supplied or contact an occupational hygienist, safety professional or 3M
representative on the Tech Assist Helpline 3M Australia 1800 024 464, 3M
New Zealand 0800 364 357.
^ Particular attention should be given to warning statements where
indicated.
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The 3M™ Versaflo™ TR-603E-ASB Powered Air Turbo is designed to be
used with an approved facepiece. This product meets the requirements of
EN12942:1998 + A2:2008 (Respiratory protective devices – Power assisted
filtering devices incorporating full face masks, half masks or quarter masks).
The Powered Air Turbo can be used with a high capacity battery pack and
either a particulate only filter or organic vapour/particulate filter. The Powered
Air Turbo incorporates an electronic control unit which provides an audible,
visual and vibratory warning of low battery and/or low airflow into the
facepiece. However, the wearer may safely exit the contaminated area with a
reduced level of protection if no airflow is provided from the Powered Air
Turbo. The Powered Air Turbo also has a filter indicator to provide
information on particulate filter loading and a battery status indicator to
provide battery charge information.
^ The filter loading indicator is for particulates only. It does not provide any
information about gas and vapour service life.
^ WARNINGS AND LIMITATIONS
Use this respirator system strictly in accordance with all instructions:
• - contained in this booklet,
• - accompanying other components of the system. (e.g. TR-603E-ASB
Powered Air Turbo Reference Leaflet, Filter User Instructions and Facepiece
User Instructions).
Do not use in concentrations of contaminant above 100 times the Exposure
Standard.
Do not use for respiratory protection against unknown atmospheric
contaminants or when concentrations of contaminants are unknown or
immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH).
Do not use in atmospheres containing less than 19.5% oxygen. (3M
definition. Individual countries may apply their own limits on oxygen
deficiency. Seek advice if in doubt).
Do not use these products in oxygen or oxygen-enriched atmospheres.
Only use with Facepieces, Filters and Spares/Accessories listed in the
reference leaflet and within the usage conditions given in the Technical
Specification.
Do not use unapproved Filters, Powered Air Turbos or Supplied Air Units as
part of this system.
Only for use by trained competent personnel.
Leave the contaminated area immediately if:
a) Any part of the system becomes damaged.
b) Airflow to the face piece decreases or stops.
c) Low airflow or low battery alarms activate.
d) Breathing becomes difficult.
e) Dizziness or other distress occurs.
f) You smell or taste contaminants or irritation occurs.
Never modify or alter this product. Replace parts only with original 3M spare
parts.
^ Do not use these products in flammable or explosive atmospheres.
Spark arrestor should be used in all situations where the Powered Air Turbo
may be exposed to sparks, molten metal or other hot particulates.
Select and wear appropriate protection when exposed to sparks and/or
flames.
For use in environments subject to high magnetic fields contact 3M Technical
Service.
^ Do not use with beards or other facial hair that may inhibit contact
between the face and the product thus preventing a good seal.
Adjust equipment as appropriate or consider an alternative form of
respiratory protective device.
Only use with the spectacle kit available as an accessory with this product,
and ensure spectacle arms do not interfere with the faceseal.
Materials which may come into contact with the wearer's skin are not known
to cause allergic reactions to the majority of individuals.
These products do not contain components made from natural rubber latex.
PREPARATION FOR USE
Respirator systems are intended to help reduce exposures to certain
contaminants and should always be handled with care and fully inspected
prior to use. Check apparatus is complete, undamaged and correctly
assembled. Any damaged or defective parts must be replaced with original
3M spare parts before use. Undertake pre-use checks on facepiece
assembly as outlined in the appropriate user instruction
Battery
Select an approved battery. (Please see TR-603E-ASB Powered Air Turbo
Reference Leaflet for list of 3M approved batteries). Inspect battery casing,
hinge, latch and electrical contact pins on battery and replace battery if
damaged. The battery should be charged immediately after receipt as
indicated on the product packaging (see Fig 1). For battery charging
instructions, please refer to User Instructions provided with battery charging
kit. The battery charge can be determined by pressing on the indicator as
shown in Fig 2. (1 bar = less than 20%, 5 bars = 80 to 100%). An identical
battery indicator is also on the Powered Air Turbo display. Fit the battery as
shown in Fig 3. The latch should engage with an audible click. Gently pull the
battery pack to confirm it is locked in place.
Filters
Select an approved filter. (Please see TR-603E-ASB Powered Air Turbo
Reference Leaflet for list of 3M approved filters).
The inner circular seal is the primary seal between the filter and Powered Air
Turbo. The outer barrier prevents ingress of dirt and debris.
^ Inspect filter and inner seal before first installation or reinstallation and
immediately replace if damaged.
Closely inspect filter plastic housing including the corners and latches.
Immediately replace if damaged.
If the filter has been mishandled or dropped, re-inspect fully. If you have any
concern, contact 3M Technical Service for guidance.
^ Always properly install the filter into the Powered Air Turbo. Ensure the
Powered Air Turbo is switched off.
To install the filter, place the left side of the filter into the Powered Air Turbo
hinge and snap the right hand side into place (see Fig 4). Gently pull the filter
to ensure proper attachment on both sides. Alternatively, a filter cover can be
attached to the filter. Filters and filter covers are marked with symbols for
easy identification and compatibility. See Reference Leaflet for details. Use of
the filter cover is optional but recommended. However, the filter cover must
be used if using a spark arrestor and/or pre-filter. Replace the filter cover if
damaged. The filter cover should be attached before installing the filter onto
the Powered Air Turbo. Insert the filter into the cover, ensuring the bottom
latch tab snaps into place and the filter label is visible in the filter window.
Then install onto the Powered Air Turbo as shown in Fig 4. If using the
optional spark arrestor and/or prefilter, place these into the filter cover in the
order shown in Fig 5A (where 1= Filter cover; 2= Spark arrestor; 3= Prefilter;
and 4= Filter). Ensure that the cut-outs of the spark arrestor and prefilter are
aligned properly before attaching the filter. See Fig 5B and 5C for correct
positioning of the spark arrestor and prefilter respectively. Spark arrestor
should be used in all situations where the Powered Air Turbo may be
exposed to sparks, molten metal or other hot particulates.
Facepiece
Check the facepiece for cracks, tears and dirt. Be certain the facepiece,
especially the face seal area, is not distorted. The material must be pliable –
not stiff.
Examine the inhalation valves for cracks or tears. Lift valves and inspect
valve seat for dirt or cracks.
Ensure that the head straps are intact and have good elasticity.
Examine all plastic parts for signs of cracks or fatigue.
Remove the exhalation valve cover and examine the exhalation valve and
valve seat for signs of dirt, distortion, cracks or tears. Replace the exhalation
valve cover.
Check that the filter is appropriate for the purpose – check colour code, letter
code and class. Check that the use by date has not been exceeded.
Airflow Check
The Powered Air Turbo is pre-calibrated to ensure the required airflow is
provided. It also compensates for changes in air density, which is affected by
elevation (height above sea level) and air temperature. However, an airflow
check using the airflow indicator tube must be performed before use.
Insert the breathing tube into the Powered Air Turbo and switch on. Allow the
