InLab
73X series:
®
4-electrode (4 pole) carbon sensors, ideal for general purpose use, general specifica-
tions: 0.01 to 1000mS/cm, 0.0 to 100°C, supplied with quality certificate
InLab
74X series:
®
2-electrode (2 pole) steel sensors, for low conductivity (pure water), general specifi-
cations: 0.001µS/cm to 500µS/cm, 0.0 to 100°C, supplied with calibration certificate
stating the actual cell constant
Intended use and principles
These products combine a state-of-the-art conductivity cell with a thermistor which is
integrated in the sensor body enabling automatic temperature compensating (ATC) to
provide an easy to use, reliable and accurate sensor. The electrode design minimizes
the potential for external interferences from sample containers or other sensors. These
sensors are equipped with cables in various lengths and two types of plugs to match
METTLER TOLEDO conductivity meters, with and without Intelligent Sensor Management
(ISM).
Intelligent Sensor Management (ISM
The METTLER TOLEDO dual channel portable meters SevenGo Duo (pro) SG23, 68 and
78 have the ability to automatically recognize ISM sensors upon connection, transfer
calibration data to and from the sensor etc. For more information regarding ISM
read the respective chapter of the operating instructions supplied with the meter.
Handling of the sensor: tips and tricks
For optimum performance, use the following operating procedures:
1. Remove all packaging material from sensor before use. Retain the quality certificate
and the operating instructions on file for reference.
2. To prevent contamination from solution to solution, rinse the sensor with distilled or
de-ionized water between measurements. If this quality of water is not available,
rinse the sensor with the solution to be measured, and then discard the solution.
3. When measuring, make sure the solution is above the cell chamber so that the
whole measuring cell is immersed.
4. Ensure the electrode measurement area is free of bubbles when measuring. To
reduce air bubbles, immerse the sensor at an angle and then rise to the vertical
position. Remaining small bubbles can be removed by gently tapping against the
sensor shaft.
5. Allow sufficient time for the sensor to stabilize when measuring samples of different
temperatures.
6. The InLab
73X series is not recommended for low conductivity solutions (<10µS/
®
cm); for these applications use the InLab
may also be needed for accurate work on low conductivity solutions to exclude the
contamination by CO
7. Clean the sensor with distilled or de-ionized water after use and keep it dry or wet
when not in use. Keeping it wet speeds up the response time.
8. If there is a build up of solids inside the cell chamber, carefully remove it with a
cotton wool bud soaked in detergent solution, and then rinse the sensor with distil
led or de-ionized water.
9. Ensure that the cable connectors are kept free of moisture and dirt.
10. For calibration and measurement procedures, refer to the operating instructions of
the conductivity meter. A booklet, "Guide to Conductivity and Dissolved Oxygen", is
also available. See the operating instructions of the meter for details.
11. In unstirred solutions, measurement drift is possible. In general, measurement using
stirred samples is preferred.
Reagents and supplies
To achieve optimum performance of this conductivity sensor, the correct calibration
solutions must be used. See the operating instructions supplied with the conductivity
meter for details.
Precautions and limitations
1. To prevent static damage to the meter, avoid touching the cell chamber area of the
sensor. Always disconnect the sensor from the meter before cleaning.
2. The InLab
73X series has limited chemical resistance. Do not use harsh chemicals or
®
highly concentrated solvents when cleaning or when taking measurements.
3. Do not use the sensor outside the recommended temperature range. Irreparable
damage might occur to the sensor.
4. The specifications and the performance of this sensor are guaranteed only when used
with the appropriate conductivity meter.
