Fig. 7
Acoustic (Steel String) Guitar:
Since the cardioid/hypercardioid polar pattern rejects off-axis sounds
from the monitors thus allowing high gain-before-feedback the C 1000 S
is highly suited for miking the acoustic guitar on stage. On a very noisy
stage, place the microphone about 8 inches from the guitar, aiming it
right at the sound hole for maximum loudness. For a less bass heavy
sound, try other places on the guitar body.
Many steel string guitars have built-in pickups. These work well for bass
and midrange but tend to miss the highs. To overcome this, use an
extra microphone, attenuating its bass and mid ranges on the mixing
desk (fig. 8).
If you want to learn more about microphones and their applications, get
a copy of "The Microphone – Technology and Techniques" by Norbert
Pawera. The book is available at your local music shop and from AKG
Vienna. It discusses, in a straightforward and readily comprehensible
manner, basic microphone designs, room acoustics (reverberation,
room radius, acoustic qualities of rooms ...), acoustic properties of
musical instruments (compass, formants ...), how to choose the right
microphone for a given instrument, and how to place microphones for
best results. Both studio and on-stage applications are discussed in
detail.
