Fuel (fig. 4)
The Cobra uses a mixture of petrol and oil, 1 part oil
to 20 parts petrol (5%).
Two-stroke oil
For the best results always use Atlas Copco's biode-
gradable two-stroke oil, which has been specially de-
veloped for Atlas Copco two-stroke engines. If Atlas
Copco two-stroke oil is not available then use a two-
stroke oil of good quality. Contact your nearest Atlas
Copco dealer for a recommendation of two-stroke
oils.
Start (figs. 5-7)
Cold start
Close the choke by turning the choke knob clockwise
to the position (CHOKE) (fig. 5).
Cobra 149, Cobra 249: Depress the throttle lever
and pull the starter handle (fig. 6).
Cobra 148, Cobra 248: Pull the starter handle.
When the engine starts, open the choke a little by
turning it anti-clockwise toward the position (RUN).
Pull the starter handle again. When the engine
starts, turn the choke slowly anti-clockwise towards
the position (RUN) over a period of 2-3 minutes to let
the engine warm up (fig. 7).
Restarting a warm machine
Check that the choke is open (i.e. knob in position
(RUN). Pull the starter handle.
If the machine stops after a short while, or does not
start at all, follow the procedure for cold starting.
If the machine does not start, it may have been
flooded (i.e. too much fuel in the combustion cham-
ber).
Open the choke (RUN position) and try starting the
engine again.
If the machine still does not start, see the section en-
titled "Fault finding".
Cobra 149, Cobra 249: The engine speed is regu-
lated by means of the throttle lever. Lever released =
idling speed; lever depressed = full engine speed.
Cobra 148, Cobra 248: The engine speed can be
regulated by means of the throttle button. Button re-
leased = full engine speed; button depressed half
way = idling speed. When the button is depressed
fully, the engine stops.
If the machine is started on top of long tools such as
probing rods; a starter-cord bracket must be used to
prevent the cord from damaging the fuel tank.
Starter-cord bracket for Cobra 148/248:
Ordering No. 9238 2820 91.
Starter-cord bracket for Cobra 149/249:
Ordering No. 9238 2826 31.
Stopping the engine (figs. 8-9)
Cobra 149, Cobra 249: Stop the engine by depress-
ing the stop button (fig. 8).
Cobra 148, Cobra 248: Stop the engine by depress-
ing the throttle button fully (fig. 9).
Drain the fuel tank before transporting the machine,
and when the machine is not to be used for a long pe-
riod of time.

Operation

Tool shank (fig. 10)
Use a shank gauge to check that the tool shank is of
the correct size, i.e. 22x108 mm (7/8" x 4 1/4"). The
shank must be clean and the tool must be in good
condition.
Flushing (fig. 11)
Before drilling, check that the flushing hole in the drill
steel is not blocked.
Inserting the tool (fig. 12)
Stop the machine. Insert the tool into the chuck and
use your foot to lock the tool retainer.
