21. Basic DVD-Background Knowledge
The DVD (Digital Versatile Disc) can store many times the amount of data of a regular CD.
The data carrier can contain data on both sides or even in two layers!
Because of this high capacity one DVD can contain films in cinema quality, in 3D-sound, in several lan-
guages and with subtitles in various languages, moreover it often contains additional material such as
"Making of" (how tricks of the film were made), cinema trailers, cut scenes and many more.
Moreover a DVD-video can either be watched in the format 4:3 (standard format) or 16:9, an option which
guarantees owners of 16:9-TVs a screen filling picture.
A DVD consists of titles and chapters. One DVD usually contains one (sometimes more) titles. One title (e.g.
the main film) can be divided into several chapters which can be found fast by using the "Skip" keys.
Moreover different camera views of a film scene (angles of view) are possible. This possibility, however, is
rarely used as this is costly and needs a lot of storage location.
The content, such as the languages, subtitles or additional material available on the DVD vary from DVD to
DVD. Please observe the list of content at the back of the DVD-cover.
In order to avoid that DVDs from a certain region of the world are played somewhere else (e.g. usually DVDs
can be bought much later in Europe than in the USA) every DVD has a so-called regional code.
On the back of the DVD a symbol similar to the globe with a number can be found; for Europe this number
is "2" - the regional code.
If the regional code of the DVD inserted in the DVD-player does not correspond with the one of the DVD-
player it cannot be played (if the regional code of a DVD is 0 it can be played in every DVD-player).
