Ron Arad's Tom Vac is an astonishingly multi-talented chair.
The wide plastic seat shell offers superior comfort and the curved
structure gives both stability and flexibility. It is stackable but it is
also generous and can be used both outdoors and indoors.
The history of how it came into being is an unusual one for Vitra.
At the end of the nineties Ron Arad was commissioned by Domus
magazine to design a sculpture for the Milan Furniture Fair. It
turned out to be a tower of stackable chairs. This first version of
the Tom Vac in deep-drawn metal was produced in a limited edition
for Ron Arad's community of collectors.
Starting from this basic idea and prompted by Ron Arad, a stack-
able chair with a polypropylene shell and a chromed steel tube
frame was then developed by Vitra for mass production.
Tom Vac had its first big appearance at the Expo 2000 world exhi-
bition in Hanover in the year 2000.
Tom Vac can also be used outdoors. In the outdoor version the
frame is galvanised and powder-coated. Special additives in the
seat shell retard the fading of colours caused by UV light. However,
if the chair is exposed to the sun for a long time, there may be
some change to the colours. We recommend that you should not
leave the chair out in the sun for longer than necessary.
If the chair is left outside when it is not being used, it is recommend-
ed that the chair is tipped to lean against the table so that water
can run off the seating surface.
Ron Arads Tom Vac ist ein überraschendes Multitalent: Die breite
Sitzschale aus Kunststoff bietet hohen Komfort, und die Wellen-
struktur sorgt gleichzeitig für Stabilität und Flexibilität. Er ist
stapelbar und trotzdem grosszügig, sowohl im Aussen- als auch
im Innenbereich einsetzbar.
Seine Entstehungsgeschichte ist für Vitra untypisch. Ron Arad wur-
de Ende der 1990er Jahre von der Zeitschrift Domus beauftragt,
für die Mailänder Möbelmesse eine Skulptur zu entwerfen. Es
entstand ein Turm aus gestapelten Stühlen. Diese erste Version
des Tom Vac aus tiefgezogenem Metall wurde in einer limitierten
Auflage für Ron Arads Sammlergemeinde gefertigt.
Ausgehend von dieser Grundidee und auf Anregung Ron Arads
wurde von Vitra anschliessend ein industriell zu fertigender, stapel-
barer Stuhl mit einer Schale aus Polypropylen und verchromtem
Stahlrohruntergestell realisiert.
Seinen ersten grossen Auftritt hatte Tom Vac auf der Weltausstel-
lung Expo 2000 in Hannover im Jahr 2000.
Tom Vac kann auch im Aussenbereich eingesetzt werden. Bei der
Outdoor-Variante wird das Gestell verzinkt und pulverbeschichtet.
Spezielle Additive in der Sitzschale verlangsamen das Ausbleichen
der Farben durch UV-Bestrahlung. Wird der Stuhl über einen län-
geren Zeitraum der Sonne ausgesetzt, kann sich die Farbe dennoch
etwas verändern. Wir empfehlen, den Stuhl nicht länger als nötig
der Sonne auszusetzen.
Steht der Stuhl unbenutzt im Aussenbereich, empfiehlt es sich,
den Stuhl schräg an den Tisch zu lehnen damit das Wasser auf
der Sitzfläche ablaufen kann.
