Automatic car charger VC2000
Item-No. 85 59 78

Prescribed Use

The compact microprocessor controlled charger is intended for charging lead-acid batteries with
12 V terminal voltage and a capacity of 5 - 100 Ah. Possible battery types are lead-gel, lead-
fleece or wet batteries. It is possible to charge batteries mounted in vehicles.
The intelligent charger recognises drained batteries and facilitates reactivating them by applying
increased charging tension. Also, sulphate deposits in old or ill-kept batteries are reduced by the
pulsating charging. This way, batteries become longer-lived and perform better. The charging
cyclus consists of 4 steps: in the first step the battery is checked and eventually charged with
increased charging current, in the second step charging with constant current (I) is done, in the
third step with normal constant current, and in the fourth with the pulsating trickle charging.
Consequently the battery voltage is always kept at an optimal level.
The charger is operated with a membrane key. Operation and status are displayed by means of
indication lights.
The charger is protected against overload, short circuit, overheating and erroneous polarity. The
clamps will be live only when a connected battery is recognised. This prevents sparks from
occurring when the clamps make contact unintentionally.
The connection is made with colour-coded clamps for universal contact, or eyelets for permanent
contact. The charging leads can be exchanged with a reverse-polarity protection socket system.
Primary batteries (zinc-carbon, alkaline, etc.) or types of battery other than lead batteries are not
to be connected and recharged.
The charger may only be connected to common household AC voltage and may only be used in
well ventilated, dry, indoor areas. With its wide input range of 100 - 240 V AC, the charger can
be used world-wide.
Any use other than the one described above is not permitted and can damage the product.
Furthermore, there are dangers such as fire, short circuit, electric shock etc..
The safety instructions must be observed!

Safety Instructions

Please read all of the operating instructions before using the product for the
first time; they contain important information regarding the correct operation.
The guarantee will be void if damage is incurred resulting from non-compli-
ance with the operatinginstructions. We do not assume any liability for any
consequential damage!
Nor do we assume liability for damage to property or personal injury caused by
improper use or the failure to observe the safety instructions! In such cases the
guarantee will be voided.
Due to safety and license reasons (CE) it is not permitted to make alterations and/or changes to
the electric appliances on one's own authority.
To ensure a safe operation the user must follow the safety instructions and warning notices that
are included in these operating instructions.
The structure complies with safety class II (double and strengthened insulating). Make sure the
insulation of the housing is neither damaged nor destroyed.
Chargers and accessories should be kept away from children! They are not toys.
On industrial sites, the accident prevention regulations of the association of the industrial workers'
societies for electrical equipment and utilities must be followed.
In schools, training centres, hobby and self-help groups, the use of chargers and accessories
should be closely supervised by trained personnel.
Avoid the operation under unfavourable ambient conditions. This damages the sensitive elec-
tronics on the inside of the charger and thereby possibly leads to danger to life of the user.
Unfavourable ambient conditions are:
- Excessive athmospheric humidity (> 80 % rel., condensing)
- Dampness
- dust or combustible gases, vapours or solvents, petrol
- excessively high ambient temperatures (> approx. +50°)
- strong vibrations
Pay attention to the charging instructions of the respective battery manufacturer
when charging.
Improper handling (for example incorrect rechargeable battery type or incorrect polarity) can
overload or damage the charger. In the worst case, the battery can explode and thereby cause
serious damage.
Keep transmitting devices (mobile telephones, transmitting systems for scale models etc.) away
from chargers as the transmitter signal could interfere with charging and possibly damage the
charger and thus the rechargeable batteries.
Never connect your charger to the mains immediately after it has been taken from a cold to a
warm room. The condensation which forms can damage the device. Allow the device to reach
room temperature before connecting it.
Do not store lead batteries in the proximity of heat sources or naked flame. Insulate its con-
®
tacts by using an insulating tape and ensure a dry and cold environment. Storage temperature
max. 40°C.
If there is any reason to believe that safe operation has become impossible, put the device out
°
of operation and secure it against any unintentional operation.
It can be assumed that safe operation is no longer possible if:
Version12/09
- the device is visibly damaged,
- the device no longer functions and
- the device was stored under unfavourable conditions for a long period of time or
- it has been subjected to considerable stress during transportation.
An exclamation point in a triangle indicates important instructions in this manual,
that must absolutely be observed.
The "hand" symbol indicates special information and advice on operation of the
device.

Startup
The appliance warms up while in use; Take care of sufficient ventilation; The
casing must not be covered!
Never charge lead batteries in a closed box.
Ensure sufficient ventilation during the charging process and avoid naked
flame! Explosive gases can be generated during the charging process. Keep
it out of the reach of children!
Before charging batteries with liquid acid, open the inspection plugs of the
single cells. Leave the battery casing to ventilate for approx. 2 minutes for
explosive gasses to volatilise!
Check the liquid level and top up if necessary. Also check the liquid level on
a regular basis during longer charging periods (hibernation). Use safety
glasses!
Do not tip over lead-acid batteries. Avoid any contact with the battery liquid,
as this causes severe chemical burns. Rinse off the contact points (skin,
clothes, etc.) immediately with ample water, to dilute the battery acid. Contact
a doctor immediately in case of contact with skin.
In case of prolonged storage, charge lead-acid batteries every 3 months to
prevent them from being drained.
Never short-circuit the battery terminals.
When connecting batteries, always observe the charging instructions of the
relevant battery manufacturer.
