CONFigure is a root level keyword with the second level keyword, VOLTage,
and 0.12 is the command parameter. The query command ends with a
question mark "?".

SCPI stems from IEEE488.1 and IEEE 488.2. Although the IEEE 488.2 standard

Response Message Data Types

Response messages are data from the meter to a computer in response to a
query. A query is a command followed by a question mark. Table 7-2 contains
explanations of data types.
Data Type
<NR1> An integer
This numeric representation has an explicit
<NR2>
radix point
This representation has an explicit radix point
<NR3>
and an exponent.
<numeric Accepts <NR1>, <NR2> and <NR3> data
value> types.
Flexible numeric representation
<NRf>
A single ASCII-encoded byte, is return for the
<Boolean>
settings query.
ASCII-encoded bytes corresponding to the
<literal> short form of the literal used as the command
parameter.
