STEPS
TRAPEZOID LFO – four steps: green, red, green, red;
combination looping.
SIMPLE SEQUENCER – any number of steps, all orange;
combination looping.
COMPLEX SEQUENCER
To create a complex sequencer set the first step to either
green (ramp) or red (hold) then set as many steps as required
following this to orange. The first step will not play as part
of the sequence, but allows control over the behaviour of the
subsequent steps. Use the SHAPE/TIME control to select how
the sequence will play back:
•
Forward
•
Backward
•
Pendulum (Forward then Backward)
•
Bouncing (1,2,1,3,1,4 etc)
•
Random
•
Random without repeats
•
Switched
If a ramp was used on the first step then the CV output is 0 V
to 1 V quantized. If a hold was used then the full range of 0 V
to 8 V is available, unquantized.
LINKING MULTIPLE STEPS MODULES
To link two or more STEPS modules together:
•
Each STEPS module has two three pin headers and two
3.5 mm TRS jack sockets on the rear of their PCBs. When
the modules are racked the left header and socket is the
input and the right is the output.
•
Link the output header or socket of the first module
in the chain to the input of the second using a 3.5 mm
TRS jack cable.
•
If you are linking more than two STEPS repeat the above
for each link.
•
Each STEPS module will still require connection to the
rack's power supply in the same way that it would for
standalone operation.
•
Your linked STEPS modules will now appear as a single
unit in operation.
Do not attempt to link more than six modules together. Link
the modules in order, left to right, otherwise operation will
be impaired. Do not link modules while they are powered up.
If using the jack sockets for linkage use a TRS lead, otherwise
the link will not work.
See also HINTS AND TIPS below for another use for
the linkage . . .
FIRMWARE UPDATE
As the STEPS does not have a USB port the firmware must be
updated using an audio source. Download the file from the
behringer.com product page and load it into a suitable audio
player. Set the output level of the audio player to around 75%.
•
Disconnect all inputs and outputs from the STEPS.
•
Connect your audio player to the CV input of
the last step.
•
Set the voltage slider of the last step to around 50% of
its travel. This acts as an input gain control.
•
Power up the STEPS while pressing and holding the
mode button of the last step.
•
Play the audio file. The output LEDs act as a VU meter: if
they are all lit in red then the audio level is inadequate,
so the gain should be raised. At ideal volumes three or
four LEDs will be lit. The LEDs in the voltage sliders will
flash in succession during the update.
•
STEPS returns to normal operation when the firmware
has successfully updated.
HINTS AND TIPS
•
Try using the output of a step set up as an LFO to CV
modulate another step, or step combination.
