1. General Information and Safety Instructions
The use of the REMS Detect GS3 assumes that one has understood and observes the
operating instructions and the national and international regulations and standards.
The device may only be used for the purpose described here.
● Do not use the REMS Detect GS3 if it is damaged. There is a danger of accident.
● Sensors may be subject to ageing. Check the function of the REMS Detect
GS3 regularly with a gas specified tor the sensor in order to ensure reliable
detection of gases, especially explosive gases. There will otherwise be a risk of
accidents. Contact our service department if in doubt.
● Before measuring, make sure that REM Detect GS3 is suitable for the gas
to be detected.
● Rule out fire, sparks and other sources of ignition during the search for
leakages in case of potential occurrence of explosive or inflammable gases.
There is a risk of explosion and fire.
● REMS Detect GS3 may not be used in areas where there is a danger of
explosion.
● Provide adequate ventilation for the leakage search to prevent suffocation
and the formation of inflammable mixtures. Suitable protective equipment may
be necessary depending on the gas.
● Do not use the REMS Detect GS3 as a monitoring device for your personal
safety!
● This device is intended for operating with 1.5 V, AAA, LR03 alkaline manga-
nese batteries. Follow the battery manufacturer's safety instructions!
● Do not use defective batteries. Remove the batteries from the REMS Detect
GS3 for longer periods out of operation/in storage. This reduces the risk of
fluids escaping from the battery.
● Avoid contact with leaking batteries. Leaking fluid can cause skin irritation and
burns. Rinse off immediately with water in case of contact. Seek medical advice
in case of eye contact.
● Keep batteries out of reach of children. Batteries can be life threatening if
swallowed, seek medical assistance immediately.
● Batteries must never be recharged, dismantled, short-circuited or thrown
into fires. The batteries can cause fires and burst. There is a risk of injury.
The operating instructions are part of the device and must be kept in a safe place.
This product must not be disposed of with household waste. REMS will
take back this product free of charge. Information about this is available
from the national sales organisations and REMS GmbH & Co KG.
Dispose of the batteries according to the national regulations. Dispose of empty
batteries at the available collection points.
2. The Leakage Detector
The REMS Detect GS3 is an electronic leakage detector for commercial use for
detecting inflammable gases in enclosed, dry environments.
Do not use the device as a gas analyser!

2.1. Switching On
Switch on the REMS Detect GS3 by briefly (< 1 s) pressing the On/Off switch.
Flash pulses indicate the battery capacity after switching on.

1 flash: Battery empty

The run-in phase is signalled by continuous flashing of the LEDs.
Steady flashing of the LEDs indicates that the device is ready for operation. An
acoustic signal is sounded additionally (approx. Once every 2 seconds).
A semiconductor sensor with a highly sensitive response to methane and other
inflammable gases is used in the leakage detector.
Such sensors always need a certain run-in time after switching on until they
reach a stable zero signal. The run-in time is necessary to process substances
that have diffused into the sensor during storage of the device. The REMS
Detect GS3 is designed to manage with the shortest possible run-in time. The
standard run-in time is 15 seconds. Depending on the storage and ambient
conditions, the standard run-in time may not be sufficient. In such cases, the
REMS Detect GS3 extends the run-in time to 150 seconds. If this extended
run-in time is not sufficient, the device outputs a fault message and the sensor
is defective.
2.2. Leakage Search
Position the device so that the gas sensor is engulfed by ambient air. The
flashing and ticking gets faster on approaching a leakage and an increasing
gas concentration. The signals get slower on moving away from a leakage
and a diminishing gas concentration. If the signal rate is fast, it can be slowed
down to once every 2 seconds again by pressing the button briefly (zeroing).
The signal rate speeds up again if the gas concentration continues to increase.
The zero point is automatically tracked when the gas concentration drops.
If gas escapes from a leak, gas traces can form in the ambient air which
are strongly influenced by air movements.
2.3. Switching Off
Pressing the On/Off switch for longer (> 3 s) switches off the leakage detector.
It also switches off automatically about 10 minutes after the last pressing of
the switch or after the last detected signal.
2.4. Changing the Battery
Screw the battery compartment open. Insert batteries with the plus pole facing
the screw-on cap and screw the battery compartment cover closed.
The REMS Detect GS3 then switches on automatically.
2.5. Function Test of the Leakage Detector
Let gas escape from a cigarette lighter near to the gas sensor without lighting
the flame of the lighter. The signal rate should get faster.
3. Fault during Operation
