Multitester MS-258 II 3in1
Item-No. 12 07 63
Intended Use
The intended use comprises the non-contact detection of alternating current with optical and
acoustic indication on electric wires, cables, sockets, switches, et cetera of 70 to 440 VAC as
well as the detection of metal parts, such as wires, cables, screws, nails et cetera in walls,
ceilings, et cetera and Coutinuity check. Two round cells of type LR44 (1.5 VDC) or a similar
type only may be used for power supply. The operation is permitted in dry and closed rooms
only; the contact with moisture has to be avoided without fail.
Use other than that described above will lead to damage to the product and
additional risks, such as short circuit, fire et cetera. The entire product may not
be changed or modified in any way.

Product description

MS-258 II is a handy quick test which can be used universally for hobby as well as school and
work. By means of the "voltage testing function", non-contact detection is possible to determine
whether alternating voltage between 70 and 440 VAC is present in insulated cables or whether
a cable / device has been connected to the mains. The indication is by optical (LED) and
acoustic (buzzer) means. In addition, the MS-258 II has been equipped with a metal detection
sensor which can be used easily to detect metallic objects, such as cables or nails, in walls and
ceilings. With the continuity check an easy and fast check of cabels, bulbs and components for
continuity is possible.
Scope of Delivery
The scope of delivery includes the Multisensor MS-258 II with two batteries of type LR-44 and
detailed operating instructions.

Safety instructions

Damage due to non-compliance with these instructions renders the warranty
void. We accept no liability for consequential damage resulting from non-
compliance with these operating instructions.
We accept no liability for damage to property or injury to persons caused by
mishandling of the device or non-compliance with the safety instructions.
Under these circumstances, any warranty expires.
A triangle containing an exclamation mark is used to draw attention to
important information in the operating instructions. Read the entire operating
instructions prior to operation.
For safety and certification (CE) reasons, unauthorised modifications and/or changes to the
product are not permitted.
In order to ensure a safe operation of the device, it is imperative that the safety instructions,
warning notes and the chapter on "Intended use" are observed.
The device may be used in electric circuits only which are protected by a 16 A fuse.
Be particularly careful when dealing with voltages exceeding 25 V alternating current (AC) or
35 V direct current (DC). Even with voltages as low as these, it is possible to receive a life-
threatening electric shock by touching electric conductors.
This product is not a toy! Keep it out of the reach of children.
Do not subject the device to any mechanical loads, and avoid any contact with moisture and
liquids by all means. Use the device in the open only in suitable weather conditions or with the
corresponding protection.
If you are uncertain about the correct connection or if you have any questions that are not answered
in the scope of these operating instructions, please contact our Technical Support or one of our
other specialists.

Operating elements

Version 04/10
(1) Metal sensor
(2) Optical indicator (LED)
(3) Sensitivity controller
Inserting the battery/changing the battery
For operation the Multitester needs two round cells of type LR44 or equivalent types, such as
SR44 or V13AG.
Proceed as follows to replace the batteries:
- Turn the shirt clip to the left by 90° to make the battery compartment visible.
- Open the lid of the battery compartment and remove the two discharged batteries.
- Replace them by two new one of type LR-44 or equivalent. Observe the polarity (see illus-
tration or imprint in the lid of the battery compartment).
- Place the lid of the battery compartment on the device, and close the battery compartment by
turning the shirt clip to right by 90°.
In order to prevent an electric shock, the device must not be operated in open
condition. After every change of battery, a self-test has to be carried out.
Do not leave batteries lying around. Children or pets may swallow them. Leaking or
damaged batteries may cause injuries when in contact with skin. Never try to
charge batteries. Do not throw batteries into the fire.
Self-test
Prior to every use the device has to be checked for correct function in a self-test. Prior to every
use, check the device for damage, such as broken housing, et cetera.
Self-test of the voltage sensor:
Turn the sensitivity controller (3) to minimum sensitivity (anti-clockwise to stop) and press the
button for start of test (4). Rub the voltage sensor (6) on your shirt sleeve or on your trousers.
A short illumination of the LED (2) and an acoustic signal indicate the correct function of the
device.
If no optical or acoustic signal occurs, the device must not be put into
operation.
Self-test of the metal sensor:
Turn the sensitivity controller (3) to maximum sensitivity (clockwise to stop). Press the button to
start the test (4) causing the LED (2) to flash and a peep sound. Turn the sensitivity controller
(3) counter clockwise until the peep sound goes off. Place the metal sensor (1) in the vicinity of
an object, of which you are sure it is made of metal. Now the LED (2) should light up and
acoustic signal should be audible.
If no optical or acoustic signal occurs, the device must not be put into
operation.
Voltage detection up to 440 V
- Carry out the self-test as described above.
- Turn the sensitivity controller (3) to minimum sensitivity (anti-clockwise to stop) and keep the
button for start of test (4) pressed.
- Move the AC Volt sensor into the vicinity of the object to be tested (socket, wires, et cetera).
The Multitester MS-258 II can also check concealed 230 V cables for voltage; however the
cable must not be shielded and must not be concealed by more than 1 cm of plaster. In order
to increase the sensitivity, you should place your free hand on the wall.
- The device will indicate the presence of an alternating current (70 to 440 V) by a flashing LED
(2) and by a chirping buzzer.
In order to avoid an electric shock, ensure that you do not touch the connections to
be measured, even indirectly, during measurements.
If you are not certain about the measuring result, please call an expert.
No measurement can be carried out on shielded cables.
Please note that high humidity may have an influence on the sensitivity of the
device.
