To prevent an excessive enrichment of the
electrolyte with potassium carbonate, the al-
kaline solution should be changed every 12
months. To do so, the battery is lifted out of
the battery container. The screw plugs on the
cell covers (fig. 6) are screwed off and the al-
kaline solution is poured into suitable contain-
ers (e. g. PE container). The used alkaline so-
lution is poured out (let it drip dry for about 20
minutes). Then the accumulator cells can be
filled up to the upper filling mark with the
freshly prepared alkaline solution. Pay atten-
tion that the sealing ring is in perfect condi-
tion. The screw plugs are fastened finger-tight.

The alkaline solution ready for use must have
a density of 1.21 g/cm³. For that, about 15 li-
tres of battery water are required. The potas-
sium hydroxide contains further additives for
which reason always the whole content of a
drum is to be diluted at a time. The container
used for preparing the alkaline solution must
be resistant to lye and heat.
The container is filled with approx. 10 litres of
battery water and then the full content of the
drum (4 kg CEAG No. 400 78 240 883) is very
slowly strewn into it while continuously stirring
the liquid.

The produced alkaline solution must be al-
lowed to stand in the covered-up container as
long (approx. 2 to 3 h)
- as it needs to cool down to approx. 20°C and
- until the rust-like suspended matters have
settled down on the container bottom.
Then the clear liquid is poured off into a lye-
resistant tank. The deposit has to be dis-
posed off in compliance with the regula-
tions!
Further battery water is added until the den-
sity of 1.21 g/cm³ is obtained. Now the alka-
line solution is ready for use. The tank must
be closed during storage so as the prevent
any chemical reaction because of the contact
with atmospheric oxygen which would affect
the quality.
Replacing the tungsten lamp
After loosening the hexagon socket screw
(page 14, item 39), the bezel ring (page 14,
item 11) including the sliding ring (page 14,
item 9) is screwed off. The assembly com-
posed of protective glass, reflector and gasket
is lifted out as a whole.
(Only take off the gasket (page 14, item 10)
when cleaning of the parts (with water and
soap) is necessary.) Now the tungsten lamp
can be taken out. The spring and ejecting ring
(page 14, items 12, 13) are removed from the
defective bulb and fitted onto the new bulb in
the same manner. Before, the cap contacts
are to be cleaned. Touch the glass bulb of the
lamp only with clean gloves or a cloth. The
headpiece and tungsten lamp are held so that
the lamp axis is vertical and the asymmetric
soldering point in the recess of the insulating
plate on the lamp cap (fig. 4, page 11) points

to the switch. The tungsten lamp is inserted in
that position. Together with the sliding ring,
the glass/reflector/gasket group is laid into the
bezel ring (page 14, item 11) and slipped over
the tungsten lamp. The bezel ring is hand-fas-
tened to ensure the tightness of the
headpiece. After screwing down the bezel
ring, the full circumference of the ejecting ring
must be visible in the reflector opening. The
bezel ring is to be secured with the hexagon
socket screw (page 14, item 39).

7.4 Manufacturing code

The battery's year of manufacture is defined
by a code which is printed on the lid of the ac-
cumulator cell
