Failure
(1) After about three days of operation, the
foaming effect of the skimmer is
insufficient.
(2) The skimmed liquid is very „clear".
(3) The foam formation decreases or is too
low.
(4) Small bubbles are still released from the
openings of the skimmer housing after
three days of operation.
(5) The drive of the pump section fails.

Cause
(a) The water has an excessively high
surface tension, caused by fat
(sebaceous matter) or high-fat food.
The sebaceous matter is introduced
when working in the tank or handling
the devices.
(b) The nozzle is soiled.
(c) Small stones or other rough matter are
located in the high-pressure impeller
housing.
(d) The high-pressure impeller does not
run freely and is stiff.
(e) The aquarium has too few skimmable
substances, such as proteins, cellulose,
algae, excretory matter of animals, and
food remainders.
(f) The water level is too low, and the
skimmer runs „dry".
(g) The pump stops, and starts operating
again after a short time. Before shut-
down, the motor turns hot due to a
damage in the motor block.
(a) The unit has been operating for one to
two weeks only (= running-in period);
the skimmer has been fitted recently
or has been cleaned.
(b) The skimmable matter in the aquarium
water does not permit a different
skimmer water, because invertebrates
or large numbers of algae are present
predominantly, but no or little excretory
matter of fish, which would permit a
darker skimmer water (depending on
the fish food).
(c) After extensive care activities in the
aquarium, more skimmable substances
are released (such as removal of algae,
cleaning of the bottom).
(a) The pump / nozzle system is soiled.
(b) The air inlet or the area around the air
regulating screw is clogged.
(c) The air hose has yielded to buckling.
(d) The air inlet is disturbed at other parts.
(e) The skimmer has not been operated
long enough.
(f) The skimming process is impaired by
fat or nicotine.
(a) Due to the oxygen saturation (surplus)
caused by the activities of the algae,
the skimmer appears to be a bubble
producer. The real sources are of
biological origin - please refer to „Aqua-
rium Ecology" published by TUNZE
Aquarientechnik GmbH or to our
Internet forum (www.tunze.com).
(a) The motor block is defective.
(b) Foreign matter is blocking the impeller.
For other failures please refer to the
instructions for use of the pump.
Remedy
(a) Discontinue feeding high-fat food for a
certain period of time. Instead add
foam-enhancing substance, such as
freeze-dried food containing protein
(shrimps).
(b) Dismount the pump. Disassemble and
clean the nozzle.
(c) Dismount the pump. Remove and clean
the impeller housing.
(d) Dismount the pump. Remove the
impeller housing, and check the play
of the impeller. Clean the impeller, if
necessary. Replace defective impeller
or any defective parts.
(e) Presumably the animal and plant stock
is not complete yet; the tank is in the
initial phase probably; wait until the
stock has increased; the skimmer can
continue operating.
(f) Set the water level correctly.
(g) Allow a workshop to check the motor
block and replace it, if necessary.
(a) Wait - the skimmed liquid will turn
darker with increased load or stock
(fish, invertebrates).
(b) Aquariums stocked primarily with
invertebrates and algae, requiring little
animal food have a lighter skimmed li-
quid than aquariums with a larger stock
of fish. No remedy required !
(c) Wait until released matter is skimmed
and the usual coloration occurs.
(a) Clean the pump and the nozzle.
(b) Close by one turn and subsequently
open again. Remove, disassemble, and
clean the skimmer.
(c) Place the hose without kinks, and
replace it, if necessary.
(d) Check all air conducting parts (nipples,
caps) for free passage and tightness,
and replace them, if necessary.
(e) Change will become noticeable after a
while, and should be completed after
three months.
(f) Reduce high-fat food.
Avoid any handling in the aquarium and
on the units. Do not smoke in these
rooms, if possible.
(a) Observe the recommendations to
reduce the natural bubble formation.
(a) Dismount and replace the motor block.
(b) Remove the impeller housing from the
pump and undo the impeller block, and
clean the impeller, if necessary.
