6. OPERATION

6.1 Basic adjustment

1. Switch on the SPL guard with the power switch. The red power indicator lights up. The unit needs some
settling time during which the red limiting indicator is flashing. If the microphone indicator lights, the
measurement microphone is not properly connected.
The external warning indicators are ready for operation as soon as the connections are made.
2. Switch on the signal source which should be controlled to 0 dB.
3. Finally switch on the power amplifier for the speakers and set its level control to maximum.
4. Adjust the threshold of the limiter with the threshold control. To turn the trimming control use an
appropriate tool, e.g. a small screw driver.
5. Select the desired operating mode with the operating mode selector:
• Limiter operation with muting (L&M):
When the level is exceeded, the limiter attenuates the output signal to the value adjusted with the
threshold control. The limiting indicator lights up red. Additionally the three-color warning indicators light
consecutively to warn of impending muting. If external warning indicators are connected, they also light
up. Now the level of the signal source must be reduced within 60 seconds otherwise all audio outputs will
be muted for 30 seconds.
• Muting (M)
When the level is exceeded, the three-color warning indicators light up consecutively. There will be no
signal limiting. After 60 seconds all audio outputs will be muted for 30 seconds.
• Limiter operation (L)
When the level is exceeded, the limiter attenuates the output signal to the value adjusted with the
threshold control. The limiting indicator lights up red. The three-color warning indicators are disabled in
this operating mode and will not light up. External warning indicators cannot be used either.

6.2 Preventing manipulation of the operating elements

After calibration, mount the supplied cover plate with both sealable screws to the front panel. Secure the
screws with sealing wire and seals. Then the control elements are no longer accessible.
