5.2 Connecting audio devices

Switch off the SPL-1 prior to connecting any units or to changing any existing connections.
The SPL limiter is inserted in the audio chain between the source (mixer or controller) and the amplifier(s).
All audio connections are balanced. This type of connection guarantees a solid sound quality even when
long audio cables are used. The XLR connectors may also be connected in an unbalanced way. For this
purpose XLR contacts 1 and 3 must be bridged.
1. Connect the supplied measurement microphone, which is to pick up the speaker signal, to the 6.3 mm
jack. The SPL limiter does not function without a properly connected microphone. If the microphone is
not connected or defective, the microphone indicator on the front panel lights red and all outputs will be
muted until the problem is solved.
The microphone cable can be extended to 100 m maximum. Pay attention to the polarity. Only use
balanced microphone cables.
2. Connect the signal source (mixer or controller) to the line inputs. Connect the output of the left channel of
the signal source to the jack CH A IN and the right channel of the signal source to the jack CH B IN.
The XLR jacks are equipped with a lock which is released by pressing the PUSH lever down and pulling
the microphone plug out at the same time.
3. The volume-controlled audio signal is present at the line outputs. Connect jack CH A OUT to the left
channel input of the subsequent PA amplifier and jack CH A OUT to the right channel input of the
subsequent PA amplifier.
4. When external warning indicators are used, connect them to the indicator outputs via standard network
cables (not included). The cable length may be more than 100 m.
5. Up to three warning indicators can be connected in series. For this purpose the RJ45 jacks of the
indicators are connected in parallel and may be used as signal input or feed-through output.
