INSTRUCTION MANUAL
WARNING:
Before using the equipment, read carefully all instructions.
1. GENERAL SAFETY FOR OPERATING THIS EQUIPMENT
- During charging, the batteries emit explosive gasses: avoid
generating flames and sparks. DO NOT SMOKE.
- Before carrying out the test, position the batteries in a
ventilated place.
- In order to prevent damage to the vehicles' electronics, carefully
read, store safely and scrupulously observe the instructions
provided by the manufacturers of the vehicles themselves;
the same applies to indications supplied by the batteries
manufacturer.
- Keep away from the reach of children.
- Protect the eyes. Always wear protective goggles when working
on lead-acid batteries.
- Avoid contact with battery acid. Should anyone be sprayed by
or come into contact with the acid, wash immediately the part
involved with clean water. Continue to rinse until a doctor will
attend to the person affected.
- It is important to connect the cables to the correct polarities.
Connect the red clamp (+) to the battery's positive terminal, the
black clamp (-) to the negative (earth).
- Use this equipment in well ventilated areas.
- Prevent black and red clamps coming into contact when they
are connected to the battery, since this can cause the melting of
the batter or other metal objects.
- Wear appropriate clothing. Do not wear flapping garments
or jewellery that might get caught into moving parts. While
working, the use of electrically insulated protective clothing is
recommended as well as anti-slip footwear. Should long hair be
worn, wear a cap to contain them.
2. INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Lead battery tester (Fig. A). Use this device to check the charge state
and starting capacity of the 6 V or 12 V lead batteries used in vehicles
(SLI batteries).
3. OPERATION
BEFORE TESTING
- Make sure the battery terminals are clean.
- Before testing a vehicle battery, remove the ignition key, switch off
the lights, remove all the connected accessories, close the doors and
the boot.
OPERATIONS AND USE
NO LOAD VOLTAGE LEVEL CHECK
- Connect the red crocodile clip (+) to the positive pole of the battery,
(EN)
and then the black crocodile clip (-) to the negative pole (Fig. B).
- The instrument needle (Fig. A-1) indicates the no load voltage of the
battery.
- If the voltage displayed is less than 12.4 V (6.2 V for each 6 V
batteries), the battery must be recharged.
- If recharging does not take the voltage to 12.4 (6.2) volts, the battery
is faulty.
STARTING CAPACITY
(CCA = Cold Cranking Amps, is the starting current from cold).
The CCA value is declared in Amperes by the manufacturer usually on
the battery itself: e.g. 520 A (EN).
This test evaluates the capacity of the battery to start a vehicle; the
tester obtains current from the battery while measuring the battery
voltage level.
The voltage level of a good battery remains relatively stable when
being recharged, while a faulty battery shows a fast loss of voltage.
Testing with a charged battery.
Connect the red crocodile clip (+) to the positive pole of the battery,
and then the black crocodile clip (-) to the negative pole (Fig. B).
Keep the toggle switch pressed for at least 10 seconds, simulating a
charge on the battery.
The needle shows the result on the section of the display with CCA:
green segment: battery good and charged (the scale varies according
to the battery amperage, the base of the green segment is for 500 A
batteries, the top of the segment is for 1000 A batteries).
yellow segment: battery flat, and its conditions cannot be determined.
Recharge and carry out the test again.
red segment: the battery cannot maintain its charge or it has a cell in
short-circuit and must be replaced.
NOTE: because of the charge current the rear and top walls of the
tester heat up. Carry out a maximum of 3 tests in 5 minutes, leaving
the tester to cool for 1 minute between one test and the next.
If these parameters are not respected, the reading may be
incorrect and the unit can be damaged.
TESTS ONLY FOR 12 VOLT BATTERIES
STARTING SYSTEM TEST
Do not use the tester charge switch (Fig. C) during this test.
- Carry out the test with the battery fully charged
- Disconnect the electric loads from the vehicle: e.g. switch off the
lights, remove all the connected accessories, close the doors and the
boot.
- Disconnect the ignition coil connection so that the vehicle does not
start (refer to the vehicle manual).
- Connect the red crocodile clip (+) to the positive pole of the battery,
and then the black crocodile clip (-) to the negative pole (Fig. B).
- Try switching on the engine by turning the key in the ignition switch,
then read the display: the value should be above 9 volts. A value of
below 9 volts could indicate bad contacts or unsuitable connections,
or a battery power/capacity that is not suitable for the vehicle.
RECHARGE SYSTEM TEST
Do not use the tester charge switch during this test (Fig. C).
This test measures the output voltage of the alternator and checks for
the presence of under or overloads which cause bad performance and
shorten battery life.
Connect the red crocodile clip (+) to the positive pole of the battery,
and then the black crocodile clip (-) to the negative pole (Fig. B).
Switch on the engine, taking it to approx. 1500 rpm.
Disconnect the electric loads from the vehicle:
e.g. switch off the lights, remove all the connected accessories, close
the doors and the boot.
Observing the segment on the right side of the instrument, the needle
should be in the green area with "OK".
Switch on all the lights (full headlights, courtesy lights, etc.) and all the
accessories at maximum (air conditioner, radio, etc.), the needle should
remain continuously in the green area. If it moves to the red section
this means that the recharge system is not operating correctly. This
malfunction could be caused by:
- In case of low voltage: loose belt, voltage regulator malfunction,
faulty alternator.
- In case of high voltage: loose or corroded connections, vehicle
voltage regulator malfunction.
