Unless otherwise specified by your child's doctor: do not remove the collar except to
wash under it and change the pads.
COLLAR REMOVAL AND SKIN CARE
Your child must be lying down in proper anatomical (airway and c-spine) alignment to
remove the collar, unless your doctor gives you permission to do this in a sitting
position.
1. Before removing the collar, note or mark with a pen where the ends of the velcro straps are. When
the collar is replaced, the straps should be returned to the same position (Figure 13).
2. Undo the Velcro straps. Remove the Back of the collar, sliding out from under neck if necessary
(Figure 14).
3. Remove collar Front. If present, unfasten the elastic Assist Strap that goes around the back of the
neck (Figure 15).
4. Clean the Front and Back of collar and replace the soiled pads with clean ones as directed in "Collar
Cleaning" section.
5. Wash front of neck with mild facial soap and water and completely dry the skin Observe for any
redness or irritation under the collar, especially over bony areas like the chin, clavicles or occiput
(back of head) (Figure 16).
6. Slide the Back carefully behind the child's neck. Make sure it is centered evenly
7. Replace collar Front by sliding it up the chest wall and scooping it up! under the child's chin.
(Figure 18).
8. Place a small pillow or folded towel under child's cheek to prevent the head from tilting sideways.
Gently roll the patient onto his/her side (Figure 19).
9. Undo the Velcro strap on the top side of the collar and fold the Back down to clean and check the
back of the child's head for redness or irritation. Make sure the back collar is re-placed and securely
refastened after skin check (Figure 20).
COLLAR CLEANING
1. Peel the soiled, blue pads off velcro attachment. Look carefully at the shape as you remove them so
that you can reposition the clean pads properly.
2. Wash pads with mild facial soap and water
DO NOT use bleach or harsh detergents. Thoroughly rinse pads with clean water. Wring
out excess water and squeeze pads in a towel. Lay pads out flat to air dry. It should take
less than 60 minutes for them to dry.
3 Wipe white plastic collar shell clean with mild soap and water (Figure 22).
4 Attach new pads. Fold pads in half with dull side out next to the velcro (shiny side goes against
skin); then center pad in the white shell. Adjust the pads as needed to make sure no plastic touch-
es the skin (Figure 23).
