Functional characteristics

The optical signal is attenuated using a neutral density
filter which is shifted into the path of radiation between
the input and output fiber connections (attenuator
module).
By adjusting the position of the filter using the rotary
control on the front panel of the devices OLA-54 and
OLA-55, the attenuation can be varied manually in the
range from 2 to 60 dB (attenuation is not dependent on
any electrical function).
The filter position is adjusted in the OLA-55M using a
motor. The OLA-55M can be used as a power controller
to ensure a constant output power level when the
attenuator is used in combination with the internal power
meter.
Please note that the insertion loss displayed by the
devices already includes the connector loss according to
Method 6, IEC 60874-1. The effective attenuation is
displayed with a resolution of 0.01 dB (OLA-54/-55:
0.05 dB) on the LC display. Favorable, low-reflection
operating conditions are ensured by the connectors as
well as by the anti-reflection coating applied to the
components in the attenuator module.
Wavelengths and test adapters
Excellent linearity is achieved across the entire
attenuation range through individual calibration of each
device based on the attenuation filter characteristics.
