d) Connecting a battery to the charger
Please read the following items carefully before connecting or charging/discharging a battery:
• Do you know all of the information about your battery that you need to know? Unknown
or unlabelled batteries, the necessary values of which you do not know, must not be
connected/charged/discharged!
• Ensure that you do not swap the battery connections (3 and 4).
• Have you selected the correct charging/discharging programme for the type of battery you
are using? Selecting the wrong programme may damage the charger and the battery and
cause a fire or explosion!
• Have you selected the correct charging/discharging current?
• Have you selected the correct voltage (e.g. for multi-cell LiPo batteries)? A dual-cell LiPo
battery can, under certain circumstances, be connected in parallel (3.7 V) or in series
(7.4 V).
• Are all cables and connections intact? Do the connectors fit securely into the sockets? Worn
connectors and damaged cables should be replaced.
• Only connect a single battery/battery pack to the charger output. Never connect several
batteries/battery packs at the same time.
• When connecting a battery to the charger, always connect the charging cable to the charger
first. Only then can the charging cable be connected to the battery. When disconnecting,
proceed in the reverse order – disconnect the battery from the charging cable and then
unplug the cable from the charger.
Otherwise there is a risk of short-circuit. This may result in a fire or explosion of the
battery.
• If you wish to charge a self-assembled battery pack, the cells must be identical (same type,
capacity and manufacturer).
The cells must also be charged to the same state of charge (lithium batteries can be
balanced using the balancer, but this is not possible with other battery packs such as
NiMH or NiCd).
• Before connecting a battery/battery pack to the charger, disconnect the battery/battery pack
from your device (e.g speed controller).
Batteries must not be connected until the charger is correctly supplied with power.
The charger will warn you of incorrect connection of batteries. If the message
'Reverse Polarity' is displayed, remove the battery immediately and only then
disconnect the charger from the power supply. The charger must be supplied with
power while the batteries are still connected.
Always check that you have set the charging parameters correctly before connecting
a battery. If the settings are incorrect, the battery may become damaged. It catch fire
or explode. Check that your wiring has the correct polarity.
Always connect the charging cables to the charger first and only then connect the
other ends to the battery to avoid short-circuits. Conversely, always disconnect a
battery from the charging cables first after charging. Never remove the charging
cables from the charger while the battery is still connected.
Important information on charging/discharging multi-cell lithium batteries with a balan-
cer connection:
Multi-cell lithium batteries usually have a balancer connection. This allows the charger to
monitor the voltage of each individual cell separately.
The charger adjusts the voltage of all cells to one another in the event of deviations. The
balancer therefore prevents one or multiple cells from over or undercharging. The balancer
therefore protects both against overcharging (which can lead to fire or explosion) and against
deep discharge of a single cell, ensuring optimal performance of the battery in your model.
Connecting a battery to the charger:
1. Start by connecting the charging cables to the two battery connections (3 and 4) of the
charging outputs. Ensure that the battery is inserted with the correct polarity (red cable =
positive/+, black cable = negative/-).
2. Connect the charger to the power supply.
The charging cable must not be connected to the battery yet. This may result in
a short-circuit of the charging cable connector, which could cause a fire or explosion.
3. The balancer connection (5) is used for connection of the balancer cable. Always insert
the balancer cable connector into the socket with the connector aligned to the right. The
negative terminal of the battery's balancer connector should usually be marked (e.g. black
cable).
4. If the balancer connector of the battery does not match the shape of the balancer connec-
tion socket, you must use a suitable connection cable. You can obtain the cable from an
accessories retailer.
5. Now, connect the charging cable to the battery. Ensure that the battery is inserted with the
correct polarity (red cable = positive/+, black cable = negative/-).
6. Connect the balancer connector of a multi-cell lithium battery to the corresponding connec-
tion. Do not use force when connecting. Ensure the correct polarity.
• Connect an external temperature sensor for battery temperature monitoring (not included) to
the temperature sensor connection (2). Temperature sensors can be purchased separately
from Conrad using item no. 2258298.
Example for charging a lithium battery with balancer connector:
To disconnect a battery, proceed as follows:
1. If a multi-cell lithium battery is connected to the balancer board via the balancer cable,
disconnect the cable from the balancer board first.
2. Then, disconnect the charging cable from the battery
3. Finally, disconnect the charging cable from the charger. Always proceed as follows:
The battery must always be disconnected from the charging cable (and from the
balancer connection in the case of lithium batteries) first. Only then can the charging
cable be disconnected from the charger.
Any other sequence may cause a short-circuit through the two round plugs of
the charging cable connected to the battery, plus there is also a risk of fire and
explosion.
4. If there is no longer a battery connected to the charger, you can disconnect the charger
from the power supply.
e) Charging
1. Connect the charging cables of the battery to the charger, ensuring the correct polarity
(red + positive, black - negative). Connect a balancer board to the balancer connection (5).
2. Connect the charger to the AC power supply and verify that all settings for the battery to be
charged are set correctly.
3. Connect the charging connection cable(s) of the battery to the charging cables connected
to the charger/board.
4. Start the charging function. Wait until the charger starts and the correct charging param-
eters are shown on the LC display (10).
5. When charging is complete, disconnect the balancer cable from the balancer board and
only then remove the battery charging connections from the charging cables.
When a balancer cable is connected, the charger automatically detects the number
of cells.
General information on using the menu
An overview of the menu structure can be found in the next section.
The charger is operated via an illuminated LC display and four buttons.
a) Settings on the charger (general)
The charger must display the main menu.
1. In the main menu, use the STATUS DEC - and/or STATUS INC + buttons (7) and (8) to
select the desired submenu and confirm the selection with one of the ENTER START
buttons (6).
• Use the STATUS DEC - and/or STATUS INC + buttons to select the various settings.
• To change a value or setting, press the ENTER START button (6). The display flashes.
• Now, modify the value flashing on the display with the STATUS DEC - and/or STATUS INC
+ buttons.
• Save the (modified) value with the ENTER START button (6).
• Press the STOP BATT/PROG
button several times returns you to the main menu.
button (9) to return to the previous menu. Pressing this
