Safety instructions

3.1

Designated use

The encoder GEL 27xx is only intended to be used for measuring tasks in the industrial
and commercial sector. It is intended to be installed in rail vehicles for motor speed
sensing, for anti-skid protection, for train control and for rolling distance measurement.
It requires connection to special evaluation electronics, which are contained for exam-
ple in a positioning control or an electronic counter.
The types GEL 2710 and 2712 are intended for bogies with outside bearings.
The GEL 2701 is intended for bogies with inside bearings.
Any other use is not considered to be designated use.
3.2

Notes for operators and manufacturers

Personnel training
 Make sure that the following requirements are met:
– Assembly, operation, maintenance and removal tasks are performed by trained
and qualified skilled personnel or are checked by a responsible specialist.
– Personnel has received training in electromagnetic compatibility and in handling
electrostatic-sensitive devices.
 Provide personnel with all applicable accident prevention and safety regulations.
 Make sure that personnel is familiar with all applicable accident prevention and
safety regulations.
3.3

Modifications and conversions

Unauthorised modifications or conversions may damage the product.
Do not make any modifications or conversions to the product, with the
exception of activities described in this documentation.
3.4

Rotating parts

Risk of injury due to rotating shafts
Hair and clothing can become entangled on rotating shafts. Prior to all
work on the encoder, switch off the operating voltage for the drive shaft
and secure the supply against switching back on!
3.5

Instructions for preventing damage and malfunctions

The encoder is of a very robust design. Nevertheless, it can be damaged by incorrect
mechanical loading. Mechanical damage can quickly result in the failure of the meas-
uring system.
