1. Introduction
Do not assume that you know how to operate and maintain
your device before reading this manual carefully. To prevent
misuse, damage, and accidents, it is very important that
everybody who will operate the McHale 994 is a fully trained
operator. They must read and fully understand all of the
contents of this manual before operating this device. Pay
particular attention to the following: safety instructions,
functions, and controls.
It is highly recommended that training be sought from your
local McHale dealer.
The operator is solely responsible for the safe use and
maintenance of the device, in accordance with this manual.
Keep this manual safe and make sure it remains with the
device at all times.

2. Product details

The 994 slicing action is powered by one double-acting
hydraulic cylinder and a uniquely designed knife. It will also
transport bales securely from the stacking site to the feeding
location. The operator splits the bale, as desired, in the
feeding area or into a feeder wagon. If the 994 splits the bale
in the feed-out area, it can also be used to push the bale
segments into the feeding location.
The manufacturer will not be held responsible for any loss or
damage resulting from device applications other than those
specified above. Any other use the device may be put to is
entirely at the owner/operator's risk.
3. Designated use of the machine
The McHale 994 is designed for attachment to a front-end
loader or mounted on an industrial type telescopic handler to
split or slice standard wrapped bales of forage in half.
The McHale 994 is exclusively designed for normal use in
agricultural applications.
The designated use of the device includes that:
 The operating, maintenance and repair instructions given
by the manufacturer will be strictly fulfilled.
 Exclusively persons who are familiar with it and instructed
about the risks are entitled to operate, maintain and/or
repair the device.
 The relevant health and safety requirements that are in
force in the country of use will be strictly followed.
 No other equipment or accessories, other than released by
McHale, are installed with this device. The use of any other
equipment or accessory is entirely at the owner/operator's
risk. In such cases, unauthorised modifications/changes
exclude any liability of the manufacturer thereafter.
WARNING: Loss of device validity - By any alteration
of safety equipment, the declaration of conformity
and the CE sign loses its validity.

4. Safety instructions

If any of the instructions in this manual appear unclear contact
your McHale dealer.
INFORMATION: The owner of this device is obliged,
by law, to ensure that every operator understands all
of the functions, controls, working processes and
safety warnings, before operating the device.
Safety devices:
 Ensure that the bale splitter knife is in the closed position
when not in use.
 Always keep the back window of the tractor closed when
using a bale splitter on the three point linkage.
 The bales of straw and silage that are being handled are
very heavy and are, as such, extremely dangerous.
 It is forbidden to operate with defective or incomplete
safety devices. Replace if necessary.
 Be careful when working with sharp objects, such as
blades and tines, always wear suitable gloves and clothing.
 Always lower when not in use, especially when travelling
on public roads.

Danger zone:
 The "Danger Zone" is the area around the device (approx.
8 metres radius from the tractor/loader).
CAUTION: The operator must be aware of the
"Danger Zone" and must ensure that there is no
person in this area while operating this device.
 The yard or work area should be kept clear of all animals
and personnel, especially children, when operating this or
any other types of machinery, especially in confined
spaces.
WARNING: Extreme caution is advised regarding
overhead power-lines, roofs, overhangs, doorways,
or obstructions, to account for the height of this
device, including the bale, in addition to the elevation
of the front-end loader.
Before repair or reassembly:
 Use safe lifting gear of sufficient capacity for machine
assembly. All chains and slings must be in good condition.
Before operation:
 Before using equipment for the first time, practice using the
controls a number of times well away from any buildings or
persons.
 Ensure that all bolts and pins are secure and that the lift
mechanisms are in good working order.
 Check for oil leaks and ensure all guards are securely in
position.
 Follow the loader manufacturer's instructions for attaching
and detaching the device.
 Be familiar with the health and safety requirements that
may be in force in the country of use.
During operation:
 Keep the loader as close to the ground as possible,
especially on sloped or hilly terrain where the 'Danger
Zone' is increased.
 Adjust driving speed to suit ground conditions. Drive slowly
on wet, slippery or uneven ground.
 Use sufficient counter balance weight on your tractor/
loader. Your traction is greatly reduced when the tractor is
loaded at the front. Never make fast turns when carrying a
load.
 Ensure that the bale is level before raising it to full height.
 Use of mobile phones or radio/music headphones is not
recommended while operating machinery, as these impair
the operator's attention.
WARNING: Never place hands/fingers anywhere
near the blade. Never place your arms, hands, legs
or head in the machine.
WARNING: Never walk, or allow anyone to walk,
under a front-end loader or elevated load.
WARNING: Beware of high-tension cables when
raising bales or loads for stacking, especially when
manoeuvring inside yards or buildings.
WARNING: The operator must ensure that no
persons or animals are carried on the device, at any
time.
Before travelling on public roads:
 The owner of this device is obliged, by law, to ensure that
every operator has a valid driving licence and is familiar
with the road traffic regulations.
 The operator must ensure that any regulations regarding
road use are adhered to.
 Ensure that the blade is lowered fully.
 Ensure the bale splitter is attached to the loader correctly.
 The front loader/bale splitter is elevated at a suitable level
to ensure operator visibility is not impaired and the safety of
pedestrians and other road users is maintained.
