Installation Instructions c 96 Decoder
Important Tip:
The 60960 special function decoder must be
installed by an authorized Märklin digital dealer
in order for the 12 month Märklin warranty to be
valid. All warranty claims automatically become
null and void when the installation is done by
any other party.
Potential Uses
This function decoder is designed to retrofi tted
into Märklin H0 or 1 Gauge locomotives, or into
H0 or 1 Gauge cars. Different electrical users in
the locomotive or car such as lighting, smoke
units, sound effects modules, etc. can then be
turned on with a locomotive controller in the
Märklin Digital system.
The following conditions must be satisfi ed:
– Only the 6021 Control Unit, the 60212 Central
Station, or the 60652 Mobile Station can be
used as digital central units.
– The four coding switches for operating modes
on the back of the Control Unit must be in the
UNIVERSAL setting (switches 1, 3 and 4 at off
= down position, switch 2 at on = up position)
or in the CONTROL UNIT setting (switches 1,
2 and 3 at on = up position, switch 4 at off
= down position).
Tip: The operating mode switches are described
in the instructions for the 6021 printed since
1998. The indications for these switches given
in earlier editions of these instructions are no
longer valid.

– The locomotive must be equipped with a
digital decoder or a Delta module for its drive
mechanism.
– A car must either have or be retrofi tted with
electrical power pickup from and ground return
to the track. On lighted cars this is already
present.
– Suffi cient space must be present in the loco-
motive or car for installation of the 60960
(at least 25 mm /1" long, 20 mm/13/16" high,
and 10 mm/3/8" deep).
– The electrical users that are to be controlled
should be insulated from the ground for the
car or locomotive superstructure (exception:
smoke generators).
– The electrical users that are to be controlled
must function with regular direct current
at 12 – 16 volts.
Important tip:
The lighting in a car coupled to the car with the
60960 decoder can also be turned on with this
decoder via the H0 current-conducting coupler
between the cars. The fi rst car would then use its
existing ground as the ground return.
In 1 Gauge this is only possible when a two-
conductor connection is made between the car
with the decoder and the second car with the
lighting! Using the wheel pickup on the second
car for a ground return can lead to a short circuit!
Maximum current load:
Function 1 and 2: max. of 500 milliamps each
Function 3 and 4: max. of 200 milliamps each
Functions 1 through 4 together: max. of 1 amp!
