ORIGINAL OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS - ELECTRIC DRIVE FOR PEDELECS

3. LEGAL FOUNDATION

This electric drive turns your bicycle into an Electrically Power Assisted
Cycle (EPAC). Another term for this type of bicycle is a pedelec (a composite
term derived from pedal, electrical and cycle), which describes a special
type of electrical bicycle where an auxiliary drive only works in tandem with
the pedal drive. The electric drive assists up to a speed of 25 km/h and
with power up to 250 watts (maximum continuous rated power) while you
are also pedaling.
Due to these limits, the bicycle is exempt from legal requirements to carry
insurance. There is no general legal requirement to wear a helmet, even
after installing this electric drive. However, for your own safety, we recom-
mend that you wear a bicycle helmet at all times! The bicycle on which this
electric drive is installed must – even before the installation – comply with
legal safety requirements such as EN14764 – city and trekking bicycles and
EN14766 – mountain bicycles.
When the electric drive is properly installed on a bicycle that meets one of
the safety regulations listed above, the bicycle then complies with the re-
quirements of European Standard EN15194 and continues to be classified
as a bicycle (bicycle paths may continue to be used).

4. SAFETY NOTES

The additional boost from the motor changes the riding behaviour/feel. To
familiarise yourself with the new technology, please do some initial test
rides until you are confident of being able to operate the EPAC safety.

All bicycles which are modified to be pedelecs (no matter if by a bicycle ma-
nufacturer or trained mechanics at a bicycle dealer) have to confirm with
the safety requirements in accordance to European jurisdiction. Appro-
priate tests with these bicycle have to be made. Thereby the structural
strength of bicycle parts and fully assembled bicycles is determined. The
Device and Product Safety Act requires that a product (here a bicycle) is
safe. By the use of the standards DIN EN14764 for city and trekking bicy-
cles and DIN EN 14766 for mountain bicycles, a manufacturer checks and
documents the safety of the bicycle. Recognizable by a sticker or visible
in the bicycle document, the bicycle dealer or the customer is able to see
if the bicycle conforms to the correct standards. With this sticker / docu-
ment you can be sure that the bicycle conforms to the Device and Product
Safety Act. It is a requirement that all parts have to been fixed correctly
by a trained bicycle mechanic who built or upgrade the bicycle. The valid
standards for pedelecs / EPAC-Bikes DIN EN15194 refers to already men-
tioned standards DIN EN14764 and DIN EN14766 when testing the bicycle.
That means that pedelecs are also tested for the requirements of these
standards. The limits for the tests are no stricter than from city / trekking
bicycles or mountain bicycles.

5. GENERAL ASSURANCE

ANSMANN grants a legal warranty for manufacturing or material defects
existing at the point of delivery, restricted to the parts delivered by ANS-
MANN. This legal warranty is not valid for defects caused by improper hand-
ling, a lack of maintenance, external impacts or mechanical damage.
This is especially important for used batteries or batteries with obvious
traces of use. Performance deficits of the battery are not a manufacturing
defect. Batteries are objects of consumption and are subject to the effects
