Information about redness of the skin and erythema ab igne (EAI):
If any kind of warmth impacts on the skin (hot-water bag, heat pad, warm water, masonry heater), so the body reacts with an increased
circulation (blood flow) of the concerned areal. This ensures that the overrun of energy which was inserted from outside will be removed and
an overheating of the skin will be avoided. The blood serves as a coolant as well as mean of transport, which receives warmth and discharges
the heat from the concerned zone. The natural and the distinctly and visibly reddened skin is the result of the increased circulation and not of
burning – this can take a couple of hours until it fades away. If the reddening of the skin remains for more than three hours, so the IR cabin
with reduced intensity should not be used, until the redness totally dimishes. In case of continuous erythema (permanent reddening of the
skin for more than one day) or reticular changes of the skin colour, after regular radiotherapy in the infrared cabin the radiotherapy should not
be repeated. Please contact your doctor to avoid suffering from an erythema ab igne. In case of chronically hyperthmia of a skin areal (there
are cases of people who were using hot water bags or heat pads) it can happen that the skin reacts with a hyper pigmentary (red-brown net
structure) because of the overly influence of warmth. This nuisance is no more fleeting and can stay visible for weeks or even months. In this
case we talk about erythema ab igne (EAI). The EAI is in mostly a cosmetic diversification and no serious damage. In case of EAI please avoid
any influence of warmth and there are good chances that the erythema disappears pretty soon. If there is further influence of warmth/heat
despite net-like erythema, then it can happen that the skin structure changes permanently.
