2.3. Measurement in detail
Attach the probe to the meter. Switch the meter
on. Set the right probe scale (see chapter
2.3.3)Insert the probe into the bale (bucket if using
the W-253). Depress the TEST button once. The
first indication you will see is the moisture reading.
2.3.1 Choose the right probe and scale
Probe number and description:
W-251; It is 50cm in length and used mainly for
measuring small rectangular bales. Scale 1.
W-252: It is 90cm in length; used mainly for large
round bales. Scale 2.
W-253; this unit is a dish type probe and used
mainly for measuring hay or silage in a bucket.
Scale 3.
You can use the 50cm also for large bales and the
90cm probe for the small rectangular bales.
Always choose the setting of the meter according
to the probe.
2.3.2 Handling of the sample and measurement
method
A. Loose hay, silage, green chop
When testing silage, green chop or windrow hay in
a plastic bucket, you must use the probe W-253. It
is not necessary to select the bale density when
using this probe.
1. In a bucket, prepare a sample of forage which
comprises 4 to 5 layers. Each layer should be
hand compacted to 200N (about 20kg) of
pressure.
2. Insert the probe into the forage firmly so that the
dish in complete contact with the sample. Make
sure that no part of the dish or probe is in contact
with the bucket.
3. Depress the meter continuously downwards with
a 20kg force. While applying pressure, depress
and release the TEST button. Maintain pressure
downward and wait for the moisture reading.
- Before taking another test, pour out the previous
sample and follow the three step process above
