4.3 Abrasive blasting.

1. Uncoil the hoses of the vacuum head, and pick up the vacuum head: hold the handle
in one hand and place the other hand on the remote-control handle. Place the vacuum
head on the surface to be treated. Release the safety device and press the button on the
remote-control handle. The abrasive mixture begins to be fed from the nozzle.
2. While continuing to press the button on the remote-control handle, gradually move
the vacuum head over the treated surface. The vacuum head brush must press tightly
against the treated surface; if slanted, abrasive can leak out from under the brush into
the surrounding area.

Only carry out abrasive blast cleaning using suitable individual
protective equipment, including protective goggles.
Ensure there is nobody without suitable protective equipment within
a 5-m radius of the object being treated.
If dust escapes to the surroundings from the dust collector, the
cyclone separator, the filter chamber or the delivery nozzle of the
vacuum pump, abrasive blasting must be stopped immediately (see
below) and the machine must be switched off. It must be checked as
to whether the filter is correctly installed, not worn and not damaged.
It must also be checked as to whether the doors of the filter chamber
and cyclone separator are hermetically closed. Prolonged inhalation
of any dust can cause serious pulmonary disease or prove fatal. Brief
swallowing of toxic dust, such as lead dust, poses an immediate
health hazard.
The toxicity and health risk depend on the dust created during the
blast cleaning process.
All the substances removed during blast cleaning must be determined,
and a safety certificate for the abrasive must be obtained.
