The sludge extractor can be used in fresh water and marine water aquariums with a
water depth of approx. 60 cm.

Installation

B
Set the impeller on the impeller holder, and fit the suction jet and the housing
together.
Inserting the batteries (4 x 1.5 V mignons)
C
Remove the battery compartment cover by applying pressure on the unlocking
button. Insert the batteries in accordance with the pole markings +/ –. Please
make sure the batteries are fitted correctly. If not, the impeller will run in
the reverse direction with very limited power. Make sure that no moisture
gets into the battery compartment and ensure that the sealing ring fits properly
when you close it. The unlocking button then has to noticeably click into place.
The alkaline batteries which are supplied with the sludge extractor last for an
operating life of approx. 4 hours and if nickel-cadmium storage batteries are
used these last for approx. 2 hours.
Cleaning the bottom
D
After the suction jet – and, if required, also the extension jet – have been con-
nected to the pump chamber the cleaner is ready for use. For cleaning the bot-
tom the suction jet is used for loosening the gravel layer to a depth of approx.
1 cm, whereby the sludge is churned up and drawn into the suction stream of
the pump. In this way the useful bacteria remain undisturbed in the lower part
of the gravel bed.
The waterproof button can be used to conveniently switch the cleaner on and
off. When switched off any gravel which has been sucked up falls back to the
bottom. Continue to clean an area until the water in the suction jet is clear.
Cleaning the filter element
E
Press the two locating buttons on the sides and pull out the filter element. The
cleaner itself can remain in the aquarium. Take one or both covers off the filter
element and thoroughly clean out the dirt which has collected there by holding
it under running water. After cleaning the filter replace the cover. Now put the
bottom of the filter element into the cleaner first and then snap home.
After using in marine water thoroughly rinse out the cleaner with tap water.
To clean the unit remove the suction jets and filter elements, pull off the impel-
ler wheel and rinse it thoroughly under running water. Keep the battery com-
partment closed!
Make sure that the sludge extractor is only operated under water so that the
impeller does not run dry. When stirring up small dirt particles the aquarium
water can become slightly cloudy. However, this is quickly removed by the
aquarium filter.
If the batteries are not being used for a long time remove them! EHEIM does
not provide any warranty for damages which are caused by leaky batteries or
storage batteries! Do not throw exhausted batteries in the household refuse.
Hand over the old batteries to your dealer or public collecting points when
buying new ones.
