B usage and limitations
Pitons are used for safety while engaging in
sports climbing and mountain climbing, by pro-
viding an anchor point for your rope and other
safety devices. A piton labelled „S" indicates
a safety piton. SALEWA also differentiates be-
tween hardened pitons (coloured black) for
hard rock types (granite, schist etc.) and pitons
made of non-hardened steel (marked with
green) for softer rocks (limestone).
The piton is generally used by hammering into
a crack or seam with a rock hammer. Please
note that the strength of the hold on the piton
depends on the type of rock and the position
and size of the piton. Pitons can be removed
from the rock by banging sideways and lever-
ing out.
c safety note
• The breaking strength and strength of hold
decrease when the piton is re-used and ham-
mered into rock repeatedly.
• Pitons left in place in the rock loosen over
time and their reliability is thus compromised.
Pitons left in position cannot be assumed to
be reliable.
• Always test the piton to see if it is secure be-
fore relying on it.
• Check the piton before and after every use.
It should be replaced immediately if there is
significant corrosion, cracks or any perma-
nent deformation.
• Have your piton checked once a year by a
mountain specialist (for example, a mountain
guide).
• Do not repair or modify the piton yourself.
• Do not hesitate to contact your SALEWA deal-
er in case of any doubt.
D care and cleaning
Clean your piton in plain water at a tempera-
ture of max. 30 degrees and subsequently dry
all parts with a cloth. You may also coat your
piton with a rust inhibitor. Do not use disinfect-
ants, as the chemicals they contain can corrode
your piton. Should you have any doubts, con-
sult your Salewa specialist dealer.
Piton
e storage
Store your piton in a dry place, away from ex-
tremes of temperature. Avoid direct sunlight,
dampness, high humidity, sharp edges, cor-
rosive chemicals or any other chemicals that
could damage your piton.
F Lifespan
With correct care and use, pitons can be used
for up to 5 years. The following factors have a
significant impact on the lifespan of a piton:
frequency of use, intensity of use, care and
storage, heavy falls, extremes of temperature,
rust, corrosion, correct placement and correct
removal of the piton. Pitons should be imme-
diately replaced if they come into contact with
harmful chemical substances.
