Operation

4.1
What you need to know and observe
before charging batteries
4.1.1

General tips

i
Every battery charging process should be preceded
by a battery test using a Bosch battery tester in
order to assess the exact condition of the battery
about to be charged.
The battery charger should be placed on a steady,
horizontal base. The location must be sufficiently
stable. Note the weight of the device and that of the
battery to be charged.
Protect the battery charger against humidity and
moisture.
Do not remove the battery charger's cover. Place the
battery charger in a location where it has at least 15
cm of free air surrounding it for ventilation purposes.
4.1.2

Important notes on charging batteries

Wear protective goggles. Clean any acid splashes
off your skin or clothing immediately, using copious
amounts of water to do so. If necessary you should
visit a doctor.
Batteries should only be charged on well-ventilated
premises.
Avoid any fires, naked flames and sparking when
charging the battery.
Explosive gases are generated during the charging
process.
Pungent gas fumes are an indication of immi-
nent danger of explosion!
Proceed as follows:
Do not switch off the battery charger! Avo-
id fire, naked flame and any sparking!
Do not disconnect the charger's crocodile
clip-on terminals!
The room is to be well ventilated immedia-
tely!
Set the rotary control to its furthermost
left-hand setting (lowest battery charge
current)!
After ventilating the room switch the power
switch on the charger to „0" (OFF)!
Have the battery checked by a Bosch Ser-
vice Point.

When charging batteries in the vehicle or where
performing a start-assist measure, follow the vehicle
manufacturer's instructions.
Only tested batteries should be used in parallel to
charge a battery.
Do not charge absolutely maintenance-free batteries
together with standard batteries (maintenance free
as under DIN).
Do not attempt to charge a non-chargeable battery.
Switch off all consumers in the vehicle when charg-
ing exhaustive discharge batteries and when per-
forming a start-assist measure.
The battery nominal voltage and the selected battery
charging current must match.
The mains supply cable and the battery charger
cables with the crocodile clips must be in perfect
condition.
!
The cable lengths and the cable cross section of the
charger's cable must not be altered in any way. The
original battery charger cable must always be con-
nected.
Before connecting the battery charger to the mains
supply, switch the mains switch on the battery
charger to „0" (OFF).
Unscrew the cell plugs on standard batteries before
starting the charging process.
When charging vehicle batteries in the installed condi-
tion, connect the black terminal clip (‒) to the body,
away from the battery and fuel pipe line.
Switch the battery charger off before connecting/dis-
connecting the charger's crocodile clip-on terminals.
Never disconnect them while a charging process is
underway.
The battery must not be disconnected from the
vehicle's electrical system for as long as the charging
process is underway.
Never short circuit the charger's crocodile clip-on
terminals.
4.2

Turning on/off

i
The voltage supply for the battery charger is taken
from the lighting line. The device is set ex-factory to
230 V ± 10 %, 50 Hz.
BSL 2470 is switched on and off using the power switch.
