Use of the mounting and wiring instructions
Target group: authorised and qualified staff.
All actions described in these mounting and wiring instructions may
only be performed by qualified persons who have been trained and au-
thorised by the operating company. Do not install or operate this de-
vice until you have read and understood the mounting and wiring in-
structions and are familiar with the valid occupational safety and acci-
dent prevention regulations. Selection and installation of devices and
their integration in control systems demand qualified knowledge of
all the relevant laws, as well as the normative requirements of the
machine manufacturer.
In case of doubt, the German language version of these instructions
shall prevail.
Scope of delivery
1 device, 1 mounting and wiring instructions, 1 carton.
Destination and use
The safety relay module SRM 21 RT2 is used for two-channel emer-
gency-stop or guard door applications. At maximum, either 1 NC and
1 NO or 2 NC contacts can be connected. When connecting 1 NC and
1 NO contact, the inputs must be wired parallelly. In addition, connect-
ed switching devices can be position-monitored if a feedback circuit
is connected.
Mounting / Wiring
Store the device for at least 2 hours at room temperature. After this
waiting time, unpack the device, install it and put it into operation. In
case of condensation, let the device dry. Install it only after complete
drying. The activation and input contacts need to be wired according to
the intended purpose. At inactive state, only the ON LED is lit - the
safety outputs are opened. The activation of the safety inputs is signal-
ized by the LEDs IN A and IN B. After starting, the LED OUT is lit - the
safety outputs 13-14 and 23-24 are closed. Carry out the wiring ac-
cording to the chosen application. You will find different application ex-
amples in these mounting and wiring instructions. Adequate fuse pro-
tection must be provided on all output contacts with capacitive and in-
ductive loads. The safety relay should be tested in a defined time peri-
od, at least once per month or after each check of the plant.
Notices
The electrical connection may only be carried out by authorised per-
sonnel. Reconstruction and alterations at the device are not allowed.
The described products have been developed in order to assume safety
functions as a part of an entire plant or machine. A complete safety
system normally covers sensors, monitoring modules, indicator
switches and concepts for safe disconnection. For the integration of
the device into the entire system, the control category determined in
the risk assessment must be strictly observed and respected. There-
fore, a validation according to DIN EN ISO 13849-2 or DIN EN 62061 is
necessary. Furthermore, the Performance Level according to DIN EN
ISO 13849-1 and SIL CL Level according to DIN EN 62061 can be lower
than the single level because of the combination of several safety
components and other safety-related devices, e.g. by serial connec-
tion of sensors. The responsibility taken by the manufacturer of a plant
or machine implies to secure the correct general function. steute does
not assume any liability for recommendations made or implied by this
description. Subject to technical modifications. From this description
new claims for guarantee, warranty or liability cannot be derived be-
yond the general terms and conditions of delivery.
Behaviour in case of failure
The output contacts switch as soon as the input contacts are closed
(2 NC contact combination), or the NC contact is closed and the
NO contact is open (NC/NO contact combination) and the feedback cir-
cuit was closed and afterwards reopens again. Exception: automatic
start. When emergency-stop or another safety function has been car-
ried out, all switching elements must be reset to start position, other-
wise the device will be disabled when switched on again. If the switch-
ing elements are not in their start position, it will be shown on the
LEDs after the next switch-on cycle: IN A lights up, IN B lights up, OUT
is off. The output relays do not make contact. In this case, the switch-
ing elements at the inputs should be checked. Reasons could be: max-
imum life is achieved, sensor and actuator are too misaligned, defec-
tive cable to the sensors and switches, welding of contacts. A fault in
the relay of the safety module also leads to a switch-on failure. This
can be caused by overload of the enabling paths because of too high
currents or unsufficient protection circuitry or by achieving the maxi-
mum life of the safety module.
Maintenance
With rough conditions, we recommend routine maintenance as follows:
1. Retighten screw connection terminals.
Disposal
- Observe national, local and legal regulations concerning disposal.
- Recycle each material separately.
