Installation and maintenance

Pipe installation

The hot water heater must be fitted with the requi-
site valves according to applicable standards, such as a
safety valve, shut-off valve, non-return valve and vacu-
um valve. The hot water heater must be equipped with
a mixer valve if the temperature exceeds 60 °C. Internal
support bushes should be fitted when a plastic pipe or
annealed copper pipe is used.
An overflow pipe should be routed from the safety valve
to an appropriate drain. The size of the overflow pipe
must be the same as on the safety valve. The overflow
pipe must be routed downwards to prevent water pock-
ets and to be frost proof. The outlet of the overflow
pipe should be visible.
The water heater is equipped with two outgoing dock-
ing connections (5) to facilitate docking from the pre-
ferred side of water heater.
A drain valve fitted to the G2 connection (5) (use an
adapter from G2 to the required size) which is not used
for docking, can be useful.
NOTE!
Do not mix the return line docking connec-
tions(5) with the immersion heater connec-
tions (7). This reduces the VPA's function.
Electrical connections
VPA 450/300 can be supplemented with one or two
immersion heaters. The connection size is G2 and the
maximum immersion heater length is 750 mm
NOTE!
Electrical installation and service must be
carried out under the supervision of a qua-
lified electrician. Electrical installation and
wiring must be carried out in accordance
with the stipulations in force.
Filling
Hot water heater
The hot water heater is filled by first opening a hot
water tap in the system and then opening the shut off
valve on the incoming cold water. This valve should
then be fully open during operations. When only water
comes out of the hot water tap (initially an air-water
mixture comes out of the tap) can the tap be shutoff
and the water heater is filled.
Heating system
When filling the heating system, the double jacketed
space should be vented by through the connection (6).
The connection can be closed when only water comes
out of the air hole.

Emptying
Hot tap water (inner tank)
Emptying the hot water heater takes place through the
siphon in the cold water connection (1). The hot water
tap in the system can be opened or a pipe coupling on
the hot water side can be loosened to provide an air
supply.
Heating system
The double jacketed container is drained through one of
the docking connections (5), or through an immersion
heater connection (7). This method leaves some water in
the bottom of the tank. If complete drainage is required
use a hose for siphoning.

Maintenance

Safety valve (not supplied)
The safety valve must be inspected regularly, about 4
times a year, to prevent clogging. It must be replaced if
it does not work correctly.
The safety valve sometimes releases a little water after
hot water has been tapped. This discharge is caused
by the expansion of the cold water taken into the wa-
ter heater, resulting in a pressure increase, whereby the
safety valve opens.
Sacrificial anode (only VPA 450/300 -E)
The water heater is equipped with a magnesium anode
(40) which offers extra corrosion protection. The anode
is consumed partly by sacrificing itself for the pores in
the enamel and partly through self-consumption de-
pending on the chemical composition of the water.
Check the anode within a year and then regularly in
relation to its use. When the anode is new it has a diam-
eter of 21 mm. When the diameter has reduced in its
most used area to under 10 mm the anode is consumed
and must be replaced. To change anodes in confined
spaces, there is a chain anode available that only needs
about 180 mm above the heater.
If anode consumption has not occurred after a few
years, this may be due to inferior conductivity in the wa-
ter and a water analysis is recommended.
Service
When a service is necessary, contact the main supplier.
You will need, under all circumstances, to state the
manufacturing number (95) and installation date.
