force produced between the proximal socket brim and the amputee's
residual limb. This feature can be independently adjusted to
accommodate the amputee's individual needs. The degree of torque
absorption is dependent upon the level of amputation, design of socket,
and corresponding socket fit.
Rotational Control Element Selection (Figure C)
These recommendations are meant as starting points only. You may
have to move up or down the chart based on amputee's comfort, activity
levels or element compression.

Initial Fitting
Have the amputee stand on a surface, which provides the highest
possible coefficient of friction between the shoe and weight-bearing
surface (example: carpet, asphalt, etc.) Now have them shift their weight
onto the prosthesis and try to rotate the prosthesis as much as possible.
The amount of rotation should be approximately 5 degrees for out
rotation and more for in rotation. If it rotates too easily, you should
change the rotational control element to one with a greater durometer or
stiffness.
Lubrication of Elastic Elements
The original elements have been lubricated (compression and rotation),
however, if it is necessary to change an element, it must be lubricated to
ensure proper function. Note: If the Total Shock
retaining clamp positioned distally CentraLube™ oil should be used for
element lubrication. If the Total Shock
clamp positioned proximally CentraLube™ grease should be used for
element lubrication. A light but complete coverage of lubricant is
required in either application.
Model 4401 CentraLube™ oil (Included).
Model 4401-G CentraLube™ grease (Not included) For inverted
applications.
HOW TO CHANGE THE URETHANE CONTROL ELEMENTS FOR
COMPRESSION AND ROTATION (FIGURE D+E)
Be certain to keep all the parts absolutely clean when opening the Total
Shock
®
.
Any kind of abrasive contamination on the inner surfaces will
dramatically shorten the life of the product.
1. Remove the proximal Adjustment plugs by rotating it
counterclockwise.
2. Remove the elastic compression element.
3. Remove the retaining ring from the end of the 8 mm axle with a
small screwdriver. Always remove the proximal adjustment plug
before removing the rotation control axle.
4. Carefully remove the 8mm axle containing the rotational control
element by pushing it through the large opening. (Figure F)
5.
Slide off the rotational control element. Apply a light, complete
coating of CentraLube™ oil or grease (depending on shock
orientation) to the new element and replace.
