f) Basic information on controlling model helicopters

Before flying the model, familiarise yourself with the control functions to ensure that you can control the model safely.
The model helicopter is controlled using the two levers on the remote control. These have the following functions:
Altitude function
The altitude function enables you to control the altitude of the helicopter (see figure 9). To change the altitude, move
the left-hand lever (see figure 1, position 8) up or down from the neutral position. As the angles of attack cannot be
changed, the altitude is changed by adjusting the speed of both rotors.
When the lever is in the neutral position, the helicopter hovers at a constant altitude. When the lever is moved up-
wards, the speed of the rotors increases, which makes the helicopter rise. When the lever is moved downwards, the
speed of the rotors drops and the helicopter's altitude decreases.
Figure 9
Tail function
The helicopter is equipped with two counter-rotating rotors, therefore there is no torque around the vertical axis (rotor
shaft). As a result, the helicopter does not require a functional tail rotor for lateral stabilisation. Each main rotor rotates
at a slightly different speed to allow the model to rotate around the vertical axis (rotor shaft). Depending on which rotor
rotates faster, the model turns to the left or right (see figure 10).
The right-hand lever (see figure 1, position 4) is used to control the tail function. When the lever is moved to the left,
the front of the fuselage turns to the left. When the lever is moved to the right, the front of the fuselage turns to the
right.
